i need some opinions on an atf leak issue,

i had rebuilt my t case for the truck and im sure it checked out fine, all the seals were new and installed correctly. i took it in to a shop to install it on my trans for a 4x4 conversion on the ranger. after they 'quickly' rebuilt the trans (new seals also) and had lots of problems getting it sealed up themselves. after they installed the t case and filled them up i have a worsening extension housing leak. it very slowly will drip atf every once and a while, it was only leaking at the back of the extension housing but now i feel its flooded slightly because its now leaking out of the front of the housing (tranny side). i checked the fluid levels and the t case is as full as when it was when i got it, the fluid is right up to the threads on the plug. i checked the tranny but it was overfilled slightly anyway so i cant tell if that is the leak or not..i also noticed inside the housing that their is a splash guard on the bottom which makes me believe it floods slightly anyway so maybe just the paper gaskets between the gear boxes are complete crap and cant hold out.

i would believe the leak would be the tranny because..

1> the tranny tilts back and constantly flooding the transmission seal
2> t case seal isnt constantly flooded because fill level is below the seal, unlikely to leak this much from the t case or i would notice it..
3>and im sure the mechanic who workied on it was just about the most shady person ive ever seen in a shop,, for a professional (Mr. Transmission was where i went)

if the case is the problem its my money to fix but if its the tranny, its there time to fix it..

>how common is it to have a t case leak like this? none of my other seals on it leak at all since their all new, especially the flooded seal at the bottom of the case.

i wanna take it back in but i dont wanna be wrong and fork over a $400 bill to replace a dumb t case seal. but i know i did my job right. and i dont wanna put myself through more work to fix their crap work either..

took the truck into the trans shop for their first attempt of a fix. to my surprise they only replaced the paper gasket between the transfercase and the ext, housing after i told them it was most likely the rubber case seal. and yet by the time i got home there was another similar drip collecting at the bottom of the extension housing. it will need to go back a few more times at the rate they are taking to replace the problem tranny seal. i might just get them to seal the extension housing with RTF sealant instead of paper gaskets

 

the truck went in for another service today and the leak has been taken care of.

im told by the specialist that the 5r44e doesnt actually have a transmission seal of any sort!? this really struck me to be an amazing find.. atf will constantly flood the housing for lubrication and is actually let back into the tranny through another hole at the bottom of the output plate.

this means the extension housing was at fault, possibly an imperfection on the surface or an out of shape contour on the surface let it leak. with a little silicon sealant on the gasket then reinstalled it has completely resolved the issue..
