Help, new to gears and things

okay i was looking around this forum and other websites, and seems that everyone changes there gears when they get bigger tires(4.10, 4.56). i just recently got 33's and i was wondering if i should invest in something like this? (does it make it faster? save gas? how much does it cost?) im very car illiterate so i hve to go to my local shop to get something installed like this.
well i hoppe someone could help me
thx
cj.

Actually I was wanderin the same thing i too am runnin 33's. My truck does not need to be any faster and gas milage has sucked since day one. My thing is my truck is a dog going up hills in 4 hi. I have noticed that the tires do not break lose or anything like that but it just loses power until it eventualy stalls. It is an 02 xlt 4.0 wit a 5spd in it! Any info on this would be much appreciated!

Same here. Its always right on that verge of not enough RPMs to turn the engine over. 4Lo it to much, while my 4Hi is doggy.

use this formula to figure out what gears you need when going to bigger tires......

new tire size/old tire size x orgional gear ratio ....

let me give you an example of what mine was like before i changed...

35"/31" x 3.73 = 4.21.....

since there isn't a 4.21 gear ratio, i went with a 4.56 gear ratio.....

yes you will get better performance out of changing gears...and for you guys that are having problems in 4HI, then you prolly should change your gears because keeping your RPM's up is key while offroading........

if your current ratio is 4.10s and you have 33s now i would leave it. a 4.56 gear is a lot for a truck running 33s and used on the road everyday.

Yeah. I have 33's with 3.73. It runs fine but I'm also using the automatic and it does shift outta overdrive a lot when hills are involved. Also, it's pretty much a Daily Driver now. I did a lot more off-roading up at school, but haven't really had time (or money or a another vehicle if I break it) since I got my new job.

Also, if you want info on what gears your truck has, TRS has a great page that should help you out. I know it helped me out.

i ran 33's and 3.73's with my 4.0 OHV and an automatic tranny and it was fine....i wouldn't change gears until you go to a bigger tire size...
