Ok on the 3.73, makes sense now.
Explorer Rears have posi, 31 spline axles and usually 3.73 gears but you can check that and as a bonus if you get a newer model I think 2001 or newer you get Disc Brakes; sounds like a winner.
You will need to move the spring perches to the top of the axle (Ranger on Top, Explorer on the bottom) or get a kit that just adds the new spring perches for Ranger mounting. Go figure, Ford made a lot of parts to swap over but made sssooo many that needed that little tweaking.
AND for the guy that mentioned 3.90 gears, that was the main gear set for Street Cars and performance back a few years.
good Luck, there are many, many Explorers/Mountaineers in the JY and in NH they are running around a buck, complete...

If you are running a V8 you NEED TO UPGRADE to an 8.8. The 7.5 inch is not reliable under that type of power. 96-01 Ford Explorers come with the 31-spline 8.8 with disc brakes. Pre-96 Expos has 10 inch drums. 4x4 models also have the Ford Trac-Lok Limited Slip. They usually come in 3.55 gears but 3.73s and rarely 4.10s can be found. With the Expo, as mentioned above, you will have to get the spring perches relocated to the top of the axle. If you can't weld or don't have someone who can weld you can go with the weaker 93+ Ranger 8.8 28-spline which will have 10 inch drums. It won't require welding since the perches are already on top and you only loss a little strength in the shafts. They are easier to find with 3.73s and 4.10s. They also coem with Trac-Loks on some of the 4x4s.
