Some references list the R8 as a 4.56 LS but that ratio was never an option on any U.S. spec production Ranger.

In 2008~2009, Ford added the R8 Ranger code for the 4.10/31-spline/3600lb 8.8" axle w/Torsen geared LS that was an option in those 2 years on the FX4 Off-Road. For those same two years, the 4.10/28-spline/2750lb 8.8" axle w/Traction-Lok clutched LS used code R7.

[For 2002~2007, The R7 code applied to any 4.10 limited slip 8.8 regardless of whether it was a 31-spline/Torsen or 28-spline/Traction-Lok. Before that, R7 was for the 4.10 Traction-Lok only.]

If the truck is a 2008 or 2009, then R8 is a legitimate axle code here.

there's always the possibility someone had it made that way, either they knew someone who knew someone or had money. or swapped in a newer axle or something. I would say that if it says R8 its a l/s 4.56 regardless what was officially available. as to how it got in their, there's any number of possibilities. suffice to say, its rare.
