Rear Pinion Angle Question

Rear Pinion Angle Question

so after i got the superlift in i put the blocks in there that came with the kit, they are the angled ones so you get the correct angle, well i put the drop shackles in as well and occasionally i will get a clunk when i hit the gas hard from a stop, after looking and thinking about it i feel like i might have too much of an upward angle, would just a regular three inch block correct this and get it back to roughly where i was without the shackles???

I would bet its in the slip joint on the driveshaft.

Since you raised the truck you moved the rear axle away from the t-case.So now the slip joint on the driveshaft is pulled apart a little bit and is likely operating in a spot with less grease and is sticking causing the clunk.

Remove the shaft and take the boot off the slip joint and use some good fresh grease on the splines and will bet you will be fine then.

so you think the steeper angle from the angled blocks and drop shackles didnt effect the angle at all???

Of course angle has a lot to do with it, but I'm with Brian. Try using some fresh grease and see what happens. Right now that's free.

This may sound dumb, but I asked the buy that owns the 4wd shop by my parents house about this. Turns out his dad has a ranger and does the same thing and it's stock. The guys at ford have told him this the 3 times he's taken it in that it's the the open rear end 8.8 that seem to do this. They couldn't find anything wrong with the truck on his and mine has done it ever since day 1 from being lifted. It's been over a year and a half and still does it and I've had no problems so far. They said it's something about the open carriers and how they grab.

As you lift a truck higher the angle of the pinion keeps going up and it does in fact look very weird but thats the way its suppost to look.I have never ran across a vehicle that had the pinion angle way off and made a noise. If they gave you wedge shaped blocks with the lift kit Im sure they designed them to be very close to the correct angles.And the with the shackles being so far away from the center of the axle I doubt the couple inches way out there will change the pinion angle much at all,maybe 1 or 2 degrees.

well i do have a liimited slip idk if that makes a difference, i understand what your saying about the angles im going to try greasing everything up and seeing if that helps, it obv has to rain today so maybe tommorrow.....thanks

you have too much pinion angle. we did the same thing on Bill (04lvl2's) truck. He had a terrible clunk with that setup so what he did was pull the block out and install an AAL.

a normal 3" block would work too but if you gonna order a block might as well get a 5" and pull out the stocker and run just 1 block.

personally id save for the skyjacker leaf springs and run no blocks.

i dont have the stock block anymore, i have the superlift angled block, an aal and drop shackles, i do have a regular three inch block that i could throw in there but i just didnt want to waste my time if im just missing something

IMO, no double stacking...i'd RCD shackle it(3" chevy drop shackle) + AAL it + and run the stock 2.5" block...it'll be the same height.

you misread what i said, i have an aal, a shackle, a superlift block with an angle, im suggesting replacing the superlift block for a normal block with no angle
