4:56 or 4:88

well i have been reading some stuff and heard that 4.56s give you better gas mileage with 35s but the 4.88s are a little bit more fun.

i have 3.27s gears stock and im running 31s right now and im getting around 17 mpg and i ust to get 20. but my truck sucks *** off road unless im in 4L.

So let me hear what you guys think

Im hoping to have my truck on 35s this summer if not this summer then definitely next.

thanks guys

4.56's are enough. 4.88's will kill you if you drive highway at all.

If it is a dedicated trail rig then go 4.88's but for a DD then go 4.56's.

ive made a few 400 mi runs with my 4.88's and 35's recently...and it aint that bad at all. I average about 16 on those runs but of course i'm always going too fast(80 at 3000rpms)...if i'm going the limit of 70 i'm pullin' in better numbers. it's all in the skinny pedal.

honestly...

if you do a good amount of highway miles...you'll want 4.56's. if not, go 4.88's.

BUT...since it's a manual..and you do off road it some...you'll love 4.88's.

Im not calling you a liar... but, I have 33"s and 3.73 and I average about 15 all around. Mostly freeway driving doing 65-70. Maybe a little exaggeration???? It just sounds too good to be true! BTW, I have tuned it to correct the speedo and odometer for the larger tires

no way...me too! i'm calibrated via my scangauge and all my numbers are pulled from the scangauge. I'm seriously in the 16s on freeway runs on average. around town im in the 16s and 17s on average...300 mi per tank is the norm for me pretty much.

it's something about my truck...idk what. maybe its my right foot. idk.

**scangauge set at -4%(35s and 4.88s, stock is 30.5's and 4.10s)**

well, youre just damn lucky. If I drive anything close to aggressively my numbers go way down. My last tank was 12 mpg due to me being late to work and driving 100 miles on the freeway at 80+ with plenty of fast acceleration.

My sport trac with a big roof basket and 33" on the roof, with 33's, 4.88s and automatic got 14mpg all the time. I can easily believe that Shane can pull 16mpg with the 35's.

With the OHV 4.0L you would be fine with 4.56 though, imo.

If you're definitely doing 35's I'd go 4.88's.

Same with me, I'm pulling 15-17mpg mixed driving with 4.88's and 35's, I'm a little less aggressive driver though. If you do any offroading and not much highway driving, you will like 4.88's and 35's.

I do a lot of hwy and a lot of towing, and I wish I had 4.56, it just runs a too high of an rpm for me right now.

I dunno about 20...but with 35's the best I saw was 18mpg going 60 ALL highway on a road trip. If I drive normal I get 16 to 17 on the highway.

I wish I had 4.56...when i'm towing my rpms are way too high for my liking.

I have 4.56's with 33's. Highway sucks. I would guess it would suck equally with 35's and 4.88's.

It is all in how you drive though. I never push my truck past 75 cause those things start screaming. I can't wait for 4.56's and 35's.

yea will my mpg increase on highway if i had 35's and 4.56's since the rpms are so high with 33's wouldnt the 35's make it a bit better at higher speeds?

Yes, I want 37's beacuse 4.88 is just too much gear for 35's...either that or I need to swap rear ends with someone with 4.56...or take my body lift back off, go down to 33's and 4.10's again :)

anothing thing to note:

the 4.0 OHV have a lower torque curve...meaning...higher torque down lower in the RPM band. My buddy's OHV w/ 35s and 3.73s and 5spd drove around remarkably great. Now he's got my old 4.10 axles and he's keeping right up with me when we're um...cough cought racing cough cough.

4.56 would be a great all around mileage + pep ratio imo for that engine(the OHV 4.0). My SOHC wants a deeper gear to get moving for some reason...my thought?...my torque is up higher in the rpm range.

Anyone wanna be jealous?? at 50-55mph in 5th gear, i'm pullin 19-20 consistantly...

Yeah 33's and 4.56's with a 4.0 in 4low is impressive. The feel of the power I have is scary I feel like something is going to break. Anyway I don't think I will wheel again until I get 35's.

All this talk makes me think how nice my drive home was from the airport in my f150, 73mph at 1800 rpm with 35's, niiiice and quiet and smooth.
Though I'm still wishing for a slightly lower gear (4.30's or 4.56)

My last thought is, with the OHV and 35's, with highway driving, 4.56's will work great.
I'm thinking back how my ranger (4.0L OHV 5 spd) was with 3.73's and 33's. I think 4.10's would have worked well with it for highway driving. I remember how the OHV doesn't like to rev high and feels like it's about to explode around 4k RPM, but has plenty of low end torque.
Mine came stock with 3.73's and 31" tires. If you try to bring it back to stock with 35's, you would need 4.21 gears (don't exist). So 4.56 gears will bring you a little lower than stock helping with the extra weight, without revving too high on the freeway.

The SOHC is a different beast, it pulls great once you get the revs up, but wants a lower gear to get moving.
