4x4 not working

my electronic 4 wheel drive just wont engage. When I flip the switch nothin happens. No light, no noise from engaging. On my way to work i'd try it again when i was at lower speeds and still nothin. After almost an hour of driving and 55 miles later I try it again and it finally engages and light comes on. Then on the way home I tried it agau=in and it still would.t kick in until I was almost home. It did that for a lil over a week and now that its gotten colder, it doesn't engage at all and I really need it becuase one canyon I drive through gets really nasty and sometimes they only let 4x4 through. I talked to a mechanic friend at ford and he said the motor that engages the 4x4 tends to rust up or get filled with dirty if you dont turn it on everyonce in awhile. He said its like $300 to for parts and labor to replace. I was wondering if any one has heard of this same problem and has any solutions before I waste $300 or so.

Take the motor out clean it up and then put it back in. This will cost you nothing if you do it yourself.

If it doesn't work after that then you can go buy a "new" motor.

yeah i am having that same problem currently... i am an automotive tech major and my professors showed me how to disassemble the shift motor on the rear of the transfer case and that solved the problem the first time... now three weeks later, its doing the same thing and it will not engage period. I am seriously considering replacing the ESC motor but i dont want to spend the money if i dont have to. does anyone know of any way to test the motor by hard wiring it or something?
