I can not stop the truck with out pressing down on the clutch in first gear, is that normal or is there something wrong? (the truck dies on me)

 

sounds normal to me

 

If your foot is off of the clutch pedal, the engine and transmission are engaged with eachother. if you are trying to stop the wheels with the clutch engaged, you are stopping the axles which is stopping the transmission which is stopping the engine. this applies to any vehicle with a manual transmission.

cuts off if you leave it in gear.... it's called lugging.

Ya it should die then. That means the clutch is engaged. Have you ever drove a manual before?

 

:-\ In order to have your foot off the clutch the truck HAS to be moving or in neutral... if it's not moving (or going slow in any gear other than 1st and in some cases 2nd) it will die unless you have the pedal in... I'm assuming it's new to you but keep at it and you'll get a hang of it....

 

No that is why I wish to learn about it before I drive my truck. I don't wanna screw up my transmission. but I drove it today and I realized what was going on before cutting it off.

 

yeah it's new, I'm used to driving automatics.

If you can drive it for more than 1 min then you're good to go. Just need to practice. You'll probably kill your clutch but we can't teach you on a computer... just gotta get out there and do it...

 

yeah i have ppl that can teach me but they are too busy. I know a lil bit about driving a manual Now.

 

When I learned it was one 30 min trip with my dad and the rest you just have to learn the hard way. You kill it, restart, and try again....

 

when my parents bought my first truck i just jumped in and drove off than it died at a stop sign than the engine died so now i have a new one thats an auto :/and 2wd

If you can get it moving, thats the hardest part of learning. It's that balance between clutch and throttle. When you slow to a stop, push in the clutch while pushing the brake. Once you learn and get good, you'll grow to love driving a manual.

 

Pretty much... just go find a business park or a really big parking lot/empty streets... just get moving fast enough to shift to 3rd or so, slow down to a stop and do it all over again... shifting through a corner is there the fun is though... haha

 

key word to driving standard is ease. Be easy and it will all come, don't rush and pop the clutch, ease off the clutch with a little gas and you will be good to go buddy.

 

It sounds like you have a general grasp on the concept...which is really really good.

Saw this one a few months back...and kinda liked it.

 

No way, the best are starting on a hill in rush hour traffic with someone riding your *** lol.

But it all takes practice, and your going to have more fun driving a manual over a silly auto.
