obtaining the best mpg's for 2005 edge

some info please,

i just purchased a 2005 edge. 3.0, 5 spd O.D. auto trans, 2WD, stock 16" tires and rims that came with a 4:10 limited slip rear end as an option. ive been getting an avg mpg of 18-19. is this acceptable or could i increase mpg with a different gear and if so what size and approx what would it cost to do so and how complicated is such a procedure? also, what size is the stock gear in a 05 edge and what mpg did it produce? should i stay where i am or consider a changeover? thanks to any/all replies and help...................................tom

Tom, I have a 2003 3.0L 4x2 Ranger Edge 4 dr with a factor tow package and 4.10 L/S rear end with stock tires.

On the interstate with cruise I average 25mpg@65mph, 20mpg@70mph, 18mpg@75mph. I did the tests on a relatively flat 40 mile strech of interstate both ways for each speed and filled up at the same station and pump. I also did tests on several trips of 300 miles or more.

Maybe since yours is a 4x4 the mileage will always be less. Maybe it's how your driving it.

I would like to get 22mpg@75mph like my last 93 Ranger did. I plan to buy a tuner to change the program for better fuel mileage. I would like to get a ScanGauge also.

ranger carl,
thanks for the reply. mine is also 4x2, i guess i should just leave well enough alone until i do some more research and a strictly hwy mileage check with tailgate off. i imagine i should obtain similar results to yours... thanks again, fellow ranger, tom

you really can't get that

ok here goes:
1. Don't drive the Ranger except for every now and then.
2. Buy yourself a little cheap ($400) beater car to drive on a daily bases
3. Save gas

Tom your gas mileage will change from day to day. You have to be real carefull when your checking is and even then it is not perfect. I was real carefull when I did my tests and feel it's as good as mine will get because it was done over several trips at different times under different conditions and averaged out

You can't use city driving to find your fuel mileage because that will NEVER be the same.

you can get a lower gear ratio (or is it higher) but something like 3.55 will give you better highway millage.... but yeah youre stuck with that millage for the most part, not much you can do about it aside from getting a more fuel efficient truck

A gear ratio change will cost you a lot more $$ then what you'll save in gas by changing the ratio.

If you wanted great MPGs, you shouldn't have bought a Ranger.
