low to high range shifting on the go?
i was wondering if its possible or even safe with the electric transfer case to shift on the go from low to high range, theres been a few times when ive been moving out of a yard onto the road in low range, (hubs unlocked) and instead of stopping, it would be a change if i could just shift to high range from low range 4rth gear into 2nd gear high range. ive done something similar in the past with a manual t/c truck , but with the electric shift theres a saftey that makes you be almost at a stop to go into/out of low range. i dont want to destroy a working transfer case though, even if it is the less-desireable electric shift.

I think you answered your own question. Just in case you didn't catch it, the electric shift case has a safety that will not allow you to shift from low to high and high to low on the move. So, unless you can figure out how to electronically by-pass that safety, you cant do it. Is it safe if you can do it? No, unless you are extremely skilled at it and then it is qestionably safe.

Of course you CAN. It might take some bypassing of safety interlocks or excessive force applies to a manual shift. But it is certainly doable.
Just make sure you have a tow truck waiting so when the pieces of flying out of it, you can get the truck towed to a shop. You should also have some speedy-dri handy to clean up all the gear oil that spills out.

well, it was just a thought, kinda thinking of the old 2 1/2 ton dumps with the 2 speed rear axle that you could split-shift on the go. i know one of the wires was a speed sensor. dont need to grenade a t-case. ive done it years back with a dana 300 in a jeep CJ7. much beefier unit than whats in a ranger. i kinda thought that with there being a oil pump in there and a planatary unit, low range was accomplished by holding or releasing a band, much like a auto trans shifts gears. based on that i thought that on the go upshifts to high range could be done. i know why theres a safety, you wouldnt want a curious child / freind to push the low range button while going down the road in the winter in 4 high at 50 mph.
