replacing whole clutch system

I am planning on replacing the whole clutch system minus master cylinder.

1. Where can I get a heavy duty clutch like a stage 2 or 3 (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, the whole works)

2. the slave cylinder does pep boys or somebody carry that or do i have to get that from Ford ? Is there an aftermarket one ?

3. any special tool required ?

Well I am currently talking to Nick from TTPerformance about one for mine from Spec. They have stage one all the way up to stage five available. You will need a clutch alignment tool but alot of times that comes with the disc. He is still working with Spec on the prices and what not so keep an eye out.

There is something a little strange with the clutch on the Mazda transmissions which I have, not sure if its the same in yours Ben. Thats why not alot of companies stock them. Jared was having a hell of a time finding someone that made them, once he did he had alot of issues.

yeah there is something strange with my clutch, but I am pretty sure its my fault. i would think if the truck was stock I wouldn't be having these problems. Between the 35's, towing, and off-roading yeah its acting up.

I meant there is something strange with the design of the clutch thats why noone makes them, or atleast a select few anyways.

what kind of issue was he having after he got the clutch ? I would think any issues would go away after getting the clutch.

The other thing was Jared was also supercharged, thats some of the issues with his clutch I think. Big power and 35s=breakage.

Honestly.. I'm surprised nobody in the 4x4manual arena hasn't stepped up to working on a mod to put in a different tranny.

Isn't the only difference between 4wd and 2wd the output shaft to the tcase?

Anyways, there already is the "different tranny mod" heh.

You might as well go 5.0 if you care so much about the tranny.

You are kind of in the same bout as Jared your truck makes some serious power so you needed to change something.

What did you do or what tranny did you put in ?

If I put a new slave in and clutch/pressure plate, throw out bearing the whole works I should be fine right ?

Ben,

2-3 months ago I replaced my clutch and slave cyl. It was quite easy. Had its querks, but every car has them. No special tools needed.....but....one HUMONGO problem I had, was the torx socket needed to remove the flywheel for resurfacing.

Bear with me:

The querks: Brother broke starter solenoid nut shaft for one of the connectors, made him go buy a used starter and carried over the solenoid. The flywheel problem mentioned above. Exhaust removal and reinstallation was a PITA!! Ended up busting 2 studs on the y-pipe, pounded out the remaining studs, and used grade 8 bolts in their place....to avoid this....USE WD40!!! Rust likes to break studs & fuse nuts. And Ford taking 10 days to find me a newer designed pressure plate.

Man, just ask any questions you need to, but most importantly....get your self a haynes/chiltons. I believe I have the haynes for like '94-04 or whatever one.

Tips: Order anyparts you think you may need and have them while disassembly. Examples: Y-pipe to single pipe gasket, Trans to transfer case gasket, stuff like that. Remove your inner fenders...you'll reach all the trans to block bolts and exhaust manifold bolts nice and easy. Might as well replace your plugs while the inners are out. I used a semi truck/18 wheeler tranny jack....don't do that. It's kind of a pita when the jack weighs 5 times more than the trans. Since you may machine the flywheel, might as well replace the bearing. The clutch alignment tool....I searched around to every auto parts place for about 6 hours and half a tank of fuel to find it. I'll see If i can find the packaging and get you a number. It says it's for a 3.0L, but worked absolutely frigginly fine.

One things for sure....it's a whole lot easier with all them splines compared with my chevys 10 spline shaft.

Blah.

I don't think centerforce has clutches for us 4.0L guys. Spec has some, I think. TT sells them, or he was or something like that.

Just ask dude.

Shane

What size was the torqs bit for the flywheel ? I just bought a set of them.

so you had you fly wheel resurfaced ? I was thinking about putting a new one in. I was looking at the spec clutches yesterday. I think I go with their stage 2. I didn't see a flywheel listed.

I went with all stock replacement parts. And just had the flywheel resurfaced. Only cost me $25, plus the $18 bearing. I believe the torx bit is a T65?? I'll have to take a peek and post later.

Now...the torx aren't like a torx screwdriver bit.....it's reverse. I'll post pics of the socket and the broken and grinded up flywheel bolts......oh 8,9,10 mm 6pt sockets were fine for all but 2 of the bolts.

I'll post pics & info later.

To my knowledge, we have no Dual Friction options yet for the newer 4.0L rangers.....at least through CenterForce

Hello Chris,
Currently we do not offer a clutch assembly for your application yet. We have sample parts, however, I do not have an estimated date of when the clutch parts will be available for sale. I would recommending checking back with us in 3 months.

Subject: 2004 Ford Ranger

Hello Roger & Brian,

I had called Centerforce a while back regarding dual friction clutch kits. I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with the 4.0L. If I recall right, there was thought to getting a kit going, but the problem that needed addressing was the self adjusting pressure plate. Are there any plans for that a DF clutch for that year and engine? Looking at the website it appears that the no DF clutch applies to the '01+ 4.0L, which would be the SOHC engine (placed into the Ranger in 01). Just curious as I'd like to upgrade to a better, stronger clutch system other than OEM.

Thanks,
Chris

I have been calling around and I got a price from www.clutchexpress.com for $409 on spec stage 2 or stage 3 same price. That's with free shipping also. The kit includes everything, clutch plate, pressure plate, alignment tool, release bearing and another bear I forget what its called. The guy is going to call me later today he is tracking down a heavy duty slave for me. I really think I am going to go with the stage 2.

the guy called me back there are no heavy duty slaves out there. There are a few OEM style but aftermarket ones maybe they will be slightly better or at least not made in france.

I paid $459 for a spec stage 2 clutch and slave. It included everything like i said above and for that price includes the slave and free shipping. He was going to sell me the stage 3 for that same price but he talked me out of it. He said basically if you don't have any mods to make the engine make more power you don't need it.
