clutch install question URGANT!!!!!1!!
so im in the middle of dropping it out...do i need to pull that cover around the shifter to get the clearance...or how can i get the motor to tilt enough to line every thing up? also do i have to pull off the top of the tranny where the shifter bolts to or can i get it out with just pulling off the arm and the mount. thanks

You get it out? When I first dropped mine, I don't know why, but I had to remove that cover to access a bolt or two and fully drop the trans. But then again, I'm a 4.0 too. bigger bellhousing bolt pattern.
Pilot Bearing.....take old pressure plate and clutch disc off. Remove flywheel. You may or may not need an external torx socket for this, on at least 01+ it requires it. IDK about your year. Get it resurfaced...you can have the machine shop press in the pilot bearing if you dont wanna do it. I use sockets and a 4lb hammer to press the old one out and new one on, after i get i tback from machining. Or they make slide hammers that pop it out while the flywheel is still attached.

well i pulled off my fly wheel and the bearing didnt come off with it....the fly wheel went around a little race like thing for the pilot bearing...so the bearing is still on the back of the motor...wtf? is it supposed to be like that? i have a slide hammer and i broke it trying to get it out....now i read something about putting geese in in the hole and then hammering a punch in it the same size as the ID of the bearing and the geese forces the bearing out...gonna go try this.

well i ended up making an end for my other slide hammer...it has like a 10lb slide thing....and got it out. now i got every thing back together except the tranny cross member....its like the fame is being pulled apart by the torsion bars...lol...well tomorrow im going to put a come-a-long on it and pull them together so i can get the bolts in on the cross member.....and then im driving in front wheel drive for a wile since the JY here doesnt have any 4x4 1998+ extra cabs :( o well.

Weird...all the times I've dropped mine or Trevors out, haven't had issues with the frame being too wide for the crossmember. Usually it's WAY tight and you gotta beat the hell out of it to fit it into place.
And why front wheel drive? What's wrong with the shaft? Wait a sec....did you ever get that rear end issue worked out?
