Very loud hum sound while driving
Hello everyone,
My Ranger is making a loud hum sound while driving. It correlates with speed, but is independent of engine RPMs. I have not noticed any change in performance, meaning that she is as slow as new…
I will appreciate any suggestions.
Here are the specs.
Model : Ranger XLT
Year: 1998
Engine: 2.5L
Transmission: 5 speed manual
Differential: the one that is useless in the snow.
Millage: 209K
Tires seem OK
Thanks a million for your help

Welcome to the forum
Reads like a wheel bearing issue
Does turning the front wheels make the sound change?
If not then problem is in the rear
Its possible the differential needs some oil
If you shift to neutral, let the clutch out and coast do you still have the noise?
You have an M5OD-R1 transmission, and they are fairly bullet proof, its possible the output shaft could have an issue but way way down on the list
I assume it is Regular cab not extended cab?

Thanks for your fast reply.
To answer your questions:
1- I checked and the sound is much louder when I am making a tight right turn at speed, much lower when taking a left turn.
2-The sound does not go away when cruising in neutral. It is independent of engine RPMs
3-I have the extended cab.
Regards,
G.
