Broken Spider Geear shaft

97 Ranger 2.3 engine 5spd. 373Ratio 7.5 RG

Has anyone had the smaller spider gear shaft in the carrier break, if so what would cause this?

thanks

The cross pin? It's not common but you wouldn't be the first one to break one. If maintenance was kept up with then maybe just luck of the draw on breaking it.

Yes the cross pin, it aso broke the bolt holding iit in place. Ford dealer wants about $175.00 plus tax for spider gear kit and cross pin ($45).
I cn get a used rear end for $200.

I think picking up a used rear end would be the better way to go. Find an 8.8 from a Ranger and it'll a direct bolt in while still being stronger than the 7.5. You wouldn't have to worry about that happening again most likely. If you're felling adventurous you can get an 8.8 from an explorer and they have larger axles, albeit you have to move the spring pads to bolt them in.
