Hi i have a 1999 Ranger 4.0 flex auto. It drives fine in 2wd but when i put it in 4wd and get any speed up in it, it is all over the road. Anyone have this problem? It is scary to drive like this, and now im just using the 4wd to get out of my driveway. i dont want to drive in 2wd in this snowy northeast.

 

How fast are you exactly going in 4wd?

 

once the front tires start spinning you lose your anchor point and you have no lateral traction, its physics and will apply to all 4x4 vehicles unless you have some super modern fancy awd system which you dont haha

once you have momentum always switch back to 2wd, you have better control that way. Unfortunately rangers or any pickup wont be fun to drive in the snow unless you enjoy being sideways. just pretend to be Ken Block and embrace the snow drifting :)

 

That is my theory every 2-4 years that we get snow/ice in south carolina. It is fun being sideways when you make your self sideways. that unexpected sideways is scary.. i have had a couple of those.. luckily nothing or anyone was hurt.

 

Let me start over, its like the front wheels are locking and unlocking while im driving. Im talking about 20 miles an hour. Do the vaccuum hubs engage and disengage while driving? Or if the pulse hub is defective it lock or not? Or I was thinking my cv axles are binding sporadically, causing the front end to drift left to right. Ive been driving in snow for 30 years and have never had this happen until I got this truck.

 

jack the truck up and put jack stands under it...start truck and pop in 4wd...see what happens

 

yeah you'll more then likely end up getting avm's or a live axle swap. pulse vacuum's are awful.
