Icon4 time to regear!!

Hey guys
I have a 98 xlt 4x4 4.0l and I'm running. on 33s with my stock gearing and I'm getting poor mpg and on starts I have a real hard time getting going, so I'm Thinking its time to regear, so my question is what spline axle do I have, what ratio is stock, would a trac-loc be better than an lsd, and should I go with 4:10s or somthing else?

Thanks for all the help
-Andy

first off you probably have 3.73 stock gears if you feel like you are getting bad gas mileage and its a little bit of a handful to get going, second you would be looking to get the 4.10's on 7.5 28 spline axle, third a trac-loc or something similar is going to be better than a lsd because it will fully lock

a re-gear sounds like a good plan. your truck being a 4.0 will have the 28 spline 8.8 rear end but theres no way we could tell you what your stock ratio is, youll have to find out using the axle code on the door sticker and we cant suggest a new ratio untill we know your stock one. if i had to geuss i would geuss somewhere in the 4:10- 4:56 range for the new gears. also the trac-loc is the same as a limited slip, just a fancy name for it. one more thing to remember is that if you change out gears in the rear you have to replace the gears in the front to match.

the 4.0's come with the 8.8 rear axle and the trac loc does not fully lock, its just a limited slip.

Thanks the reason I ask about the trac-loc is beacuse my. Buddy has a set of 4:10s and a trac-loc out of his mustang and is willing to trade it for my K-frame out of my fox body

Also where could I get a unexpencive set of 4:10 gears for my d35

that doesnt sound like a bad trade, but IMO if 4:10's are what your after i would go to the junkyard and get a full axle with the 4:10's and trac loc already in it, they are very common. as far as the D35 gears, i have a set of 4:10's for that at home id sell ya. im almost 100% sure there is no difference between my 2001 D35 and your 98 D35. you should be able to find a local shop to install them for you for a couple hundred or so.

You have a 28 spline 8.8 in the rear. More than likely 3.73 gears. 4.10 gears would barely bring the truck back to stock gearing with 33s, and it's not making up for extra rolling mass, extra drag and higher profile. So what I'm saying is, 4.10s are going to be a very small improvement for the cost, performance will still be slightly worse than stock.
Think about it, gearing is expensive and you don't want to do it twice. I wouldn't want to spend a bunch of money and feel like I didn't get what I wanted. I would go for 4.56 gears personally, especially since you are up at altitude where performance sucks to begin with.

If you do settle with 4.10 gears, you might as well find a junkyard axle with 4.10s already in it. If you find a front diff to match, even better. You can do the swap at home in a couple of hours. Just be aware that junked parts can be trouble. I bought a used from diff with 4.88 gears and an aussie locker that was supposed to be in great shape. I installed it myself and found out a few days later that the pinion seal leaked like a **** and it had to be all removed to fix it again.

ok then that brings me to another question... if i re gear now and want to eventually get 35s should i gear for 35s now and from then save for my new tires? i just drive to school work and the house, so i dont think the mileage would hurt me as bad as if i were to be on the highway.

so what would you do if you were me?

Thanks
-Andy

If you plan on staying with 33s then get 4.88. If you might go up to 35s then you'll be set for 35s. Either way 4.88 will have you covered. I run 5.13s with 35s and I'm very happy with them. Almost everybody will agree that 4.88 gears and 35s are a good combo.

x2 on BrianWilsons post. I bought a 4.10 l/s rear end that was supposed to be in great shape. We found out everything inside had to be replaced but for $100 what are you gonna do? I now have 4.56
s and feels just like it would feel when I had stock everything.

If you plan on going 35's then yes go ahead and get the gears you would need to run those. Better then doing the same thing twice.

I've got your 8.8 stuff. You can get the fronts from complete offroad.
