Next project: drop in cam shaft. which one should i get? I want a milder cam. Leaning more towards comp cams street/strip. I drive mainly on-road but do a little offroading, nothing too hardcore (wont go above step bars and dont take bad risks). I want a little more kick (like there isnt enough in the 4.0) and a bit of change in sound(again). Any feedback? Thanks

 

Comp Cams lists a cam for the 4.0 OHV but I don't think they grind any for the 4.0 SOHC.

The cams at the bottom of this page are 4.0 OHV. They are the only ones listed in Comp Cams online catalog for a Ford 4.0L. It has been very hard to find aftermarket cams for the 4.0L SOHC. Hopefully that will change now that the Mustang has this engine.

 

i did see a few SOHC 4.0L cams somewhere. compcams was just the first place that came to mind. i cant remember where i saw them but they had street street/strip mostly strip full race and i think one or two more.

also...there is a certain search on comp cams that does bring up a 4.0L SOHC cam

 

man i want a cam...cant find that one site again and its pissing me off. anyone with sweet hookups out there reading this? tell lunati to make a 4.0L SOHC cam with hydraulic lifters. if you can, get it in the voodoo line. if not that then comp cams will be the best.

ive got a few sources who may be able to grind you a custom cam, but youd pay for it. next time i talk to them ill ask about it

 

i dont think theres any grind shops around here that would do that. if you can get me one for $400-$450 id be happy. of course the cheaper the better. thanks for the thought.

 

So you want less duration and less lift and less power? Or did you mean wilder?

 

i think he meant more than stock, but not TOO much more than stock....no NHRA racing for him....

 

i talked to a friend about this chris, he told me comp cams can regrind the cams you have for around $700, then youd have to pull the engine to do it all. he said you would get out of the whole deal for around $2000, and he also said its not worth it. This is Doug904 we are talking about, so in my book, what he says goes. he says youll get more with headers exhaust intake and a flasher than you would with a cam, the factory cams are powerful enough.

 

ive done everything with piping and mufflers except go full straight pipe. i was wanting some long tube headers but stopped that search for some odd reason so im still running stock manifolds. with my y-pipe setup i think i would benefit a lot from a cam. thats wut ive been told by people who know just about everything you would want to know about that sort of stuff.

and by milder i did mean wilder but its referred to as milder.

another thing: why would i have to pull the engine to change out the cam on an OHC engine? isnt it called that cuz the cam is over the head?

 

Hmmm....

The 4.0L SOHC has 2 cams. The cam drive and tensioner to the passenger side cam is on the back of the engine and it is inaccessible with the engine in the truck.

 

bob, what he means by milder is in the performance cam industry. he means a milder performance cam, that will be more powerful than stock, but mild compared to other higher performance cams.

We are thinking in reference to what he has. Normally I would say I want a wilder cam, to mean more wild that what I have.

If you have to spend $2000 and pull the engine anyway, just replace the engine with something more powerful. Or buy a truck that came with a powerful engine from the factory.

 

who says i have to take the truck to a shop and get anything done? i can do everything at my house or some other place. i do have access to a few tools.

no offense man, but it doesnt seem like a job you could do yourself. each head has one single over head cam, so there are 2 cams. if you just do one, your engine most likely wont run at all. and you must pull the engine to get to the back of the head to remove the tensioner assembly. its an undertaking that few would do, even those who know these engines like the back of their hand. Those who know, specifically Doug and D. dont think its worth spending the money on. Not sure if you know those guys or not, you still need to PM Doug904 and let him tell you just what is involved

 

With most manufacturers, Single Over Head Cam refers to the number of cams per cylinder head. An inline SOHC has 1 cam but a flat or vee SOHC engine like yours has 2.

Similarly, a Dual Over Head Cam engine has 2 cams per cylinder head, so an inline DOHC has 2 cams but a flat or vee DOHC has 4.

 

And you arent even getting into how much of a ***** it would be to time it after you put in the new cam. etc

On the old OHV 4.0 this was something you could do to add power.
with the 2001+ rangers coming with the sohc 4.0 its pretty much not worth doing. Cost/time involved/gains achieved.
