Ranger left me stranded. Clutch problem.

Everything was functioning normally today, when I coasted to a stop sign in neutral. I tried to throw it in 1st, no luck. I couldn't get it to go into any gears, I have no clutch at all. There seems to be normal friction at the pedal, but the throw is a little shorter than normal. When the truck isn't running, it goes into all the gears fine. So, I assume it is a problem with the hydrolics somewhere between the pedal and tranny. My reservoir has fluid.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? Is it the slave cylinder? I am going to have to barter a lot of plumbing work to have my mechanic drop my tranny and have it back on the road by thursday.

Am I right that I have to drop the tranny for that? I have 73k miles, should I do any other maintenance while I'm in there?

Rear seal, like $4. Seal the shift rail plugs.

You could drop the tranny, replace the slave, bleed the whole she-bang. Take the Master out and bench bleed it, connected to the new slave; make sure you get the quick disconnect tool, put it back in by tomorrow night. Put synthetic ATF in it.

Seriously. Not that hard.

Same exact thing happened to me a while back, Stop at the light and couldnt get into any gears at all. So we replaced the slave then had to replace the master cylinder too. Problem fixed. That master is a pita to bleed though.

Yep you have to drop the tranny. Is your clutch fluid reservoir low?

Yes, the older MO5D's had rubber plugs. Newer ones may be metal, in which case, disregard.

Update: I just called the mechanic to see when they were going to put it on the lift, so that I could come help. He said that they rolled it off the trailer this morning, started it up, and it drives fine. I am on the way down there now to pick it up. I am happy that it is working, but it is scary knowing that this thing is a loaded gun. Especially knowing that it is my office now.

You should go ahead and replace the master cylinder. My truck had a on and off problem when it was fairly new. Sometimes I could only get the clutch to disengage if I would push the pedal all the way to the floor and let my foot side slip to let the pedal slam to the upward position. After that I could push down on the pedal and the clutch would disengage.

The first time I took it to the dealer, they could not find anything wrong with it. I drove it a couple more weeks and it got worse. I waited until it would not work well and drove it straight to the dealer. They finally realized it was a bad master cylinder and replaced it. The replacement was also bad and they had to order another one. It has been working fine for about 80K miles now.

We took it apart last night. It was not what we thought it was. Turns out that the pilot bearing was shredded, letting the shaft hang lower than it was supposed to. I replaced everything while it was out. Slave, throw out bearing, clutch. Shifts a lot more smoothly now. The guys that own the shop owe me a favor, so they charged no labor, only the $250 for the parts.

I see clutch kits everywhere for over $200, and they don't include a slave cyl. I forgot to mention that he also put a new battery in the truck.

$250 is cheap. Figure $180 for clutch kit(disc/pressureplate/alignmenttool/pilotbearing) + $75 for the slave + $3 for brake fluid + $20 for resurface flywheel.....you got a great deal on parts imo.

Glad ya'll get 'er figured out. Odd how a pilot bearing would just go like that before any other component.

My clutch pedal is soft, could it be the master cylinder or is there some way to adjust the pedal? It seems that it will engage at the bottom next to the floor. I have a 1989 Ford Ranger with a 2.9 6cyl with 296,000 miles. It leaks everything, I don't have to change the oil, it does it automatically, I just add to it...lol. I have to keep a piece of carpet in the back so that I can lay it underneath when I go to friend's houses so I don't stain the driveways. And I keep a supply of fluids under the hood. There is so much gunk under it, I can't find where it is leaking.
