Rear Diff related to smoking brake?
First off i would like to aploagize because i know that the admins biggest pet peeve is guys who ask questions without reading through the forums first but i am in a bind and would really appreciate the communities help so that i know if im being taken for a ride by the mechanic.
So i was on the highway yesterday and in bumper to bumper traffic. After about 10-15 minutes of stopping and going, on and off the brakes, i noticed that when i would let off the gas i wouldnt coast but instead it seemed like the brakes were on...after 20-30 seconds of that i noticed that white smoke was coming off the driver side rear brake. I pulled over to the sholder cheked the brake fluid which looked pretty clean and got back on the highway going a steady speed with no issues. turned around and went home...still no problems (this time not on and off the brakes, but still peridically using them). i took it to the local pep boys and they checked the driver side rear brake and said everything looked fine but the rear differential was leaking fluid...Today they will have a master mechanic open it up and (i'm sure) give me bad news....
My amazement is that a problem which would present in this way would be related to the differential. It happened, then simply went away and only show up on the driver side as temporary seizing brakes. I was convinced the brake fluid was just heating up to much...maybe a problem with the brake line or caliper.... Please help me understand how this could be related tot eh rear diff.
