Transmission and Rear End Fluids?

OK, OK I know theres a similar thread already started but thats about a letter from Ford.

I can't seem to find the articles (posts) about what synthetic fluid everybody recommends or is using currently. Before my next trip I'm changing the tranny and rear-end fluids for good measure...so whats the best and where'd you get it?

I saw Mobil Fully Synthetic ATF at Murrays Auto today for like $7 a quart...I think our auto tranny needs like 8-10 right?
I also saw something about a rear-end lube for LSD that requires no friction modifier?

I use Amsoil full synthetic in my tranny -- I did a complete drain and fill and didn't just drop the pan and drain what comes out there. I will use Lucas in my new rear end but used Amsoil in the old one. I want the "climbing" additives of the Lucas on the rear end gears.

im useing amsoil in the tranny and rear end and i love it... i noticed a increase in gas mileage after the change as well as smoother shifts... john i would stay away from lucas after seeing this study here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.htm ... it looks as though air bubbles have gotten trapped in the gear oil with the lucas additive... this guy's page is full of all kinds of useful information http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

John I will second that bobistheoilguy.com

Lucas oil additive is baddddd stuff!

Now onto the thread topic
I used redline D4 Atf for the transmission. get 12 or 13 qts
Drop the pan change the filter refill with new stuff..
Then flush the system by removing the line at the cooler
and pouring the new stuff in. (better how-to is around somewhere)
I am going to use redline 75w-90 gear oil in the rear/front (eventually)
they were both changed under warrenty.

OK I have a question about this Amsoil stuff...from what I can tell AMSOIL and Royal Purple are in the same category...cult like following, low advertising budget, hard to find in stores. Whats the diff?

So far so good...definitely doing the tranny fluid swap! Is 75w-90 the "Ford" recommended for our rear-ends...and where did I hear that theres some fluid specifically for LSD which requires no friction modifier?

I had the same question Jeff. I know for a fact I need a tranny fluid change (maybe Daddy Griggs will help me out on how to do a complete one). However I also need a rear change since my clutch packs are sliping in my LSD. What kind of additive do I need for it and does advance auto sell a decent gear oil since I can get 20% off there. What weight would I need for the rear and the tranny. I really need to get a owners manual. Thanks for the help guys. And thanks Jeff for asking the same questions I was gonna post about this tonight anyway.

well the rear end fluid i used was 75-90w i believe and amsoil does sell the additive to stick in there too... as far as the tranny fluid goes you just need ATF but im not sure what kind the autos take or how much it takes... the rear end uses just under 3 quarts and you will need some rtv silicone to make a new gasket seal on the diff cover... its very simple to do and it only took me about 30 minutes or so to do

AMSOIL and Royal Purple are close to the same, you just have to choose. AMSOIL was the first, back in the 70s, to produce a publicly available 100% synthetic oil, and has been continuing research ever since. why they have such a low advertising budget i couldnt tell you

amsoil has three grades of gear oil, some of which claim that they need no extra additive, but if you do get chatter they do have an additive as well. the other thing is, with me here on the site at least, is ive been continually running the deal of, "the price you see is the price you pay" which means i take all the profits and pay YOUR tax and shipping. i end up breaking even usually but at this point that doesnt bother me anyway. i would be happy to mail anyone some info on amsoil, there is marketing stuff out there and i have a whole drawer full of it

The oil I was using was Lucas gear oil, pre-blended. Not sure what amount of the additive is in it. I'll take a closer look and see what I can find out. I wasn't adding Lucas to another oil, I was going to use their gear oil.

I know about bobistheoilguy but I haven't visited in ages. I'll check it out and thanks for the heads up.

The trans system fluid capacity is about 10 quarts varying slightly depending on what engine and drive you have. Here is a change procedure that looks like it will work but you will probably need help:

Well, you might still have a point. I know people who swear by the stuff, but then again there's probably some who swear AT it also...

As for engine oil I usually use Valvoline Durablend although I might just go Full Synthetic with Valvoline or Mobil 1...as for rear-end and tranny fluids I'll take a look around and see what I can find local!

So long as it says Mercon V compatible I won't void any warranties right???

you need to check this thread, it has some good info on AMSOIL synthetic oil. it will FAR outperform Vavoline and Mobil 1. AMSOIL also offers gear lube. if you want some more info i can mail you some for free, or just talk to me online! there are plenty of members here who can vouch for amsoil

ATF is automatic transmission fluid. There is no grade, its universal.
75w-90 is the weight of the gear oil in the rear diff and the front diff if you are 4x4.

Mercon ATF is what your tranny will use, that means that any grade Mercon or higher (Mercon III, Mercon V) will work for you
