1354 electric transfer case issues

New here and not sure if explorer stuff is allowed here? have a 92 explorer that I was told had the transmission and transfer case replaced, but the shift motor is out of place and the transfer case won't shift into 2wd, 4wd, or 4low. Is this possible if the motor is off by a few degrees? What tools do I need to remove the shift motor?

Open end wrenches and socket set should be all you need.

There are 4 bolts, 3 on the case and 1(maybe 2) on the end of the electric motor

Good read here on shift motor: Servicing A Transfer Case Shift Motor

There is a video here on how to get shift motor out: Installation: Installation Instructions for The Shiftster | The Shiftster
This is from the Shiftster site, the shiftster can be put on in place of the electric motor to make transfer case manual shift although you do need to get under vehicle to shift it.
Main benefit is that you will always have 4WD when you need it, the Ford electric shift can be finicky past 15 years old, so...........
Many use the shiftster with manual locking hubs, and leave it in 4hi for the winter with hubs unlocked, then lock the hubs when 4WD is needed.
So no "hoping" the 4WD will work next time you need it.

1994 and older use a different control system than 1995 and newer.
But the system basically works the same
The shift motor housing has 4 contacts inside.
When you select 2WD, on the dash switch/button, the Control module activates the motor and it turns the geared wheel with the contacts(also transfercase shifter) when contact is made controller stops the motor.
If correct contact is not made the dash light will flash indicating a problem.
Problem can be bad motor, bad gear in motor, blown fuse(there are 2 or 3), bad module, even stuck transfer case shifter.

Control module info here: Ford Ranger 4WD Control Module
