i'm not sure to answer your question...
but when I did it mine was pretty dry, so I cleaned it up a bit and put a fairly thick bead/gob around the entire spline before I put it back in. I don't think too much would hurt, the excess would only get splattered into the rubber boot.

Best way to do this is completely remove the shaft, take it apart, wipe off all the old grease, install new grease, put the boot back on and use a similar style cinch type metal band to put it on. Just zip ties will not be sufficient in keeping dirt/water out and grease in!!!!

Did this to my truck 6 months ago, still without a clunk. Love it! it was so annoying.

If it has the 2 piece slip yoke driveshaft...otherwise one piece driveshafts use the output yoke coming out of the transfer case as the "slip" portion to provide movement with suspension articulation.

I'm confused, so this isn't for all 2-piece driveshafts? My 97 ext cab clunks badly from a stop when I ease the clutch out. There doesn't seem to be much play going into the rear end, so I was thinking it was the slip yoke instead of a U-joint.

I suspect you have the best answer yet, especially since I'd like to replace the ujoints at the same time! Thanks!
