i'm not sure to answer your question...
but when I did it mine was pretty dry, so I cleaned it up a bit and put a fairly thick bead/gob around the entire spline before I put it back in. I don't think too much would hurt, the excess would only get splattered into the rubber boot.

Best way to do this is completely remove the shaft, take it apart, wipe off all the old grease, install new grease, put the boot back on and use a similar style cinch type metal band to put it on. Just zip ties will not be sufficient in keeping dirt/water out and grease in!!!!

I'm confused, so this isn't for all 2-piece driveshafts? My 97 ext cab clunks badly from a stop when I ease the clutch out. There doesn't seem to be much play going into the rear end, so I was thinking it was the slip yoke instead of a U-joint.
