range selector
I have a 2005 ranger. recently I needed to put the truck into 4wd . I switched the **** on the dash and it wouldnt go in for quite a while and then it finally did. And then about a week later I was just messing around with the **** and had it in 4wd low and I couldnt get it to come out of 4wd low. There was a body shop nearby so I stopped and the man there said he knew exactly what was wrong. He tapped on the unit with a hammer,he said it was stuck from non-usage. That did not help so I thanked him and drove off. After another mile or two it finally went back to 2wd. So today I took the whole unit off the truck, disassembled it, cleaned it,and put it back together. Now it seems to be switching to 4wd but it doesnt seem to be going into 4wd low.,and the indicator light in the dash says 4WD, just 4WD. Did I put it back together wrong or what?

Did you read the manual? Is the truck an automatic? If so is it in neutral when you are trying to shift? Are you stopped when you try to shift?
If you are doing all of that properly, you could have a bad switch, bad wiring or still a bad transfer case shift motor.
I don't remember where the info is, but I would start by checking voltage on all of the wiring and making sure the signal is getting where it needs to go. It could just be some corroded connectors from salt working it's way into them.

Nope no manual yet. The truck has an automatic 5 spd.I was stopped while trying to shift(as a matter of fact,I was stuck in a hole) all it would do was spin one back tire (and Ithought it was supposed tp be POSI?) .And now I can hear it shift(with everything off) The wiring all looks good and the connectors were very clean. Is there a way to set the Clocking? of the unit.Because i did mess with the position of the D shaped protrusion.I noticed a black magic marker line near the D shaped thing but didnt exactly remember if the two were lined up or what.
