changing diff fluid...

My dad has a 99 Explorer Eddie Bauer with the auto 4x4 feature. I was going to change the diff fluid on it but wasn't sure if I'd need a friction modifier for it. I checked the code and don't see the "LS" Limited Slip code on the sticker on the door.
Wasn't sure if the manual would tell me or not, haven't checked that yet.

Ok, so the manual states that if you have a traction-Lok axle, I'm assuming that's a limited slip axle" then you would need to add the friction modifier. It also says that vehicles with the 3.73:1 or 4.10:1 axle ratios require synthetic fluid and are lubricated for life and do not need changed unless a leak is suspected. well, its leaking lol

If the axle doesn't have one of these ratios, I'm assuming it means that the regular 80W90 would apply? How can I find out what ratio is back there and if it's a Traction Lok to see if i need an anti friction modifier?

I just went and checked the door stickers. Mine is listed as an R7 axle and when i changed the fluid, it took 80W90 with friction modifier. The Explorer is listed as "Axle 47" on the sticker in the door. ......if that means anything to anyone lol. ARGH I REALLY don't wanna call the dealer and ask them. I always get some BS answer.

Well you can pull the cover and see if it is L/S or not. If it is L/S there there will be a S spring.

Well according to one of the links Earl provided, the 47 axle is an 8.8 but isn't a limited slip. so can i just fill it up with gear oil and be done or will i still need a modifier?
i need to read the links he sent a little deeper, im at work and keep getting busy lol

If no L/S then no modifier.
