You have to remove the pinion nut and you'll have to remove the yoke as well. Make sure you drain the diff first and if its the rear pinion seal you're replacing then you'll need a couple of new crush sleeves and you'll have to make sure you get the pinion depth and pinion bearing preload within spec.

thats sucks.....guess it will just have to leak. Doesnt take but a one pump of fluid once a month to fill it anyway.

Its the front pinion seal

You don't have to remove the pinion to replace the front seal. Remove the pinion nut and yoke, pop the out seal out and put the new one in. Put the yoke back on and tighten the nut. Be careful with tightening the nut though. This nut determines pinion depth and pinion bearing preload and incorrect specs can be disastrous.

Just curious......How would you put the nut back on to the same specs as before you took it off? Is there a certain way to do this?

It can take a seasoned mechanic to get it right. It can be different for all gear sets, theres no sure way to tell. If you get lucky though you might not have any problems just slapping it back on. I wouldn't recommend doing it that way though. I'd say a good starting point would be 20 inch pounds of torque.

i got a little trick for everyone changing a pinion seal. When you look at the rubber you will see a round spring lookin thing around the rubber take it off and you will see a break in it a little and you can unsrcew the spring take the side where its smaller and cut like a 1/4'' off of it and then screw it back together and slide it back on and it will deff not leak
