4.56's for 285's
#13
I run 4.56's with 33's but the TSL's are a rugged tire and don't roll very nicely not to mention the rims I have are very heavy. The 4.56's give me the acceleration I wanted and great power off road. I barely have to floor it any more. At least I have needed to floor it yet I am sure they are going to get me into more difficult situations in the future.

Note in the pic below that my truck is on 35s, so the headlights arent near the ground.

I say do it. Look at a stock truck they come with anything from a 235x75 to a 31" tall tire and come with 4:10's and now you are running a 33" tall tire which puts you out of your powerband. A 4:27 or a 4:56 gear will put you back to within factory specs and since they do not make a 4:27 gear for our front axle then that makes the 4:56 the only choice to bring it back to stock.
with all that said you can run a 33" tall tire with 4:10's with no problems but you will not have the stock performance. Also as some people have stated you may get a little better gas mileage but that also really depends on how much your new 33's weigh because if they are heavy then your gas mileage will go down trust me.

There's a lot of variables that no one knows or has even bothered to ask which would effect the optimal gear ratio.
1) Is this a daily driver?
2) How much freeway driving is there?
3) What is the top speed you travel?
Some people over at http://www.offroadrangers.com/forum have 32s & 4.56 gears, so you may want to checkout what they have to say about it.
That seems a bit exaggerated. I'm about 2.5K @ 65 MPH. I doubt a .26 change in gear ratio would double his RPMs...

i blew out my rear end w/ 31's so i had 4.56 put it... its sucks on the free way, but i did it so in the future i can put bigger tires on. i would recommend 4.10's. at 70mph i'm at 3k rpm. but thats not the problem. when my speedometer reads 70, i'm doing around 60. so my stock governer is 95, in reality, around 80. (which causes trouble driving on the Florida Turnpike daily)
