gear oils

Not exactly Ranger related, but could be applicable.

I've hit the milestone on my Outlander to change out the transfer case oil. And of course, Mitsubishi says you have to use straight 90w oil only. So I'm trying to educate myself on gear oils to figure out what would work.

Will oils that have the LS additive already in it, be okay for applications that do not spec it? Kinda thinking about our open diff applications as well.

You don’t need a limited slip additive with most synthetic gear oils. They are fine to use with an open differential as well.

Thanks KLC,

one more question. The Outlander is spec'd for a "hypoid" gear oil. In reference to a "hypoid gear oil", I've read that hypoid gears are supposed to be a high pressure setup, and so wouldn't a synthetic that has an "extreme pressure" additive pack work?

I've been looking at something like this:
Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Manual Transmissions - 75W90 NS GL-5 Gear Oil
Weights look right, still GL-5, no LS additive, extreme pressure additive....

Does it have a limited slip? Otherwise, yes, that will work as long as it’s the recommended weight. GL-5 oils are designed for use with hypoid gears. In fact, most lubricants for differentials are hypoid gear oils.
