Sunday out of nowhere my peddle goes to the floor when i go to start it and it is really loose, added some fluid and got it drivable but it grabs right off of the floor, figured it might be a master or slave problems not for sure. the truck has 142,000 miles. I took it for a well trusted transmission shop and had it looked at, they told me after observation that my clutch is shot, and needs to be replaced. They quoted me $1000 to fix it.. i about hit the roof when they told me this, i have never heard of a clutch job costing this much, does anyone know if that is in the right ballpark or are they trying to rip me off? Ive heard that this year of ranger you have to pull the tranny and stuff to replace it, is that why it is costing me this much?

 

The slave is internal, so yes the trans has to come out. Can be a real PITA if the Y pipe studs are rusted, and they almost always are. I've done a few, and I actually have to do my own 04 in the next few weeks.

When I was in a rush once (had to get back to post while in the Army, no time to DIY), dealer charged me about 1200 to do the whole job, so it's not too far off. Whatever you do, replace everything while in there. If you got that many miles stock, consider yourself VERY lucky. I'm happy if I get 75k out of my slaves.

 

Okay thank you for your help, i will go ahead and have it done. Also yes this is the stock clutch, all of the miles are highway from a guy who traveled states for his job, i just picked the truck up 2 weeks ago.

 

From Rock Auto the parts will run $250 average for the clutch kit. And the master/slave set around $150. Rest is some small parts etc that usually are needed, labor and machining etc. Just did my clutch, not too hard, but not a whole lot of fun either.
