Help with defect determination

Ok finally getting back to my 85 Ranger V8-C4 swap.

Just found and bought a 86 302 roller motor and a
70 C4 the case number says DODP7006A I searched Google and found a table that said it came off a 1970 289 Falcon does this sound right? I hope so or I may have threw away 150.00

Bought both of these on the ground, the tranny I was told was an in laws who bought a car with it in in 1971 and parked it in 1979 and it ran sweet!. Said all was well.

Picked it up in the rain and after making sure the bell was right and it was a case fill I loaded it and left. Got it back to the shop and now I find out the truth.

I have not rebuilt an auto (car) tranny that is but have rebuilt heavy equipment trannys.

I started to inspect the TC and see the OD surface that the pump shaft seal rides on is Ud out. Worn a major groove in it. Are there shim sleeves made to fix these like axle seal areas? If not I guess I am getting hammered for a new TC.

Next question I wonder if this is a V8 C4 can anyone help with these numbers I posted for the tranny?

Thanks

I've always heard the sleeve you're refering to as a speedy sleeve. I can't comment on if they have them or not for a torque converter. I think if the tranny has been sitting for 3 decades like your story says I'd go through the whole thing.

As for the part number Fords part number system is based losely on the first letter = the decade, then the character is the year.
So your DO = 1970.
The 3rd letter means the car line D = Falcon
The 4th letter is what the part is for P = transmission, another example E = Engine
The 7006 basically means transmission. Thats the code for tranmission, an engine block for example is 6010.
The last letter in your case A = the number of times the part was revised. So A is the first try at the part.
So for the most part the story you were told holds up.

For example I have a some 428 CJ heads laying on the part number on them is C8OE-6060-N
they're supposed to be (but not always true)
1968 heads, from the Fairlane/Torino line, and for the engine. They've also been revised a crap load of times to get to the letter N.

You'll find though that in some cases the part number isn't always true. For example they ran the 428cj from 1968-1970 and all the heads are C8's.

I just pulled out one of my books and it didn't list falcons part numbers only torino and mustang. The falcon became the torino in 1970 but the part number doesn't match up. The smallest engine my book lists an auto tranny for is a 302, your tranny could of come from a 6 banger. I can't tell you if the bell housing is the same, you mentioned you checked "the bell" I assume you mean bell housing.

I found a website that deals with transmissions. They have a whole list of spec numbers and from that list it says the DODP were all bolted to 6 bangers.
http://mmerlinn.tripod.com/trans/fdc4f/fbdc4_a0.htm

take a look

I matched the engine plate from the engine and it matches the bell pattern. Bolt up should be ok.

Yep the bell is a 157 tooth (10.5" bolt spacing) and the ribs run down to the case. It is a case fill. I want to rebuild it. Any suggestions for a complete kit? I will be doing a little work to the 302 and will be running a carb. Maybe a 650 or 750 Holley double pumper. I always ran them on my drag car and never had any issues. My son has one on his 83 Mustang and it is dependable in any season.

It is a roller engine so I will have to recam and do some head work to get it running a carb. Too old to start learning EFI.

What rebuild kit would you say would be best for just street driving but doing a few upgrades to fix the weaker parts of this C4

Thanks
