The 2.8l, 2.9l and 4.0l engines all have the same bellhousing bolt pattern.
The M5OD-R1 transmission was used from 1988 to 2012 in Rangers, it is a good manual trans.
M5OD-R1 doesn't use Gear Oil, it uses ATF, yes, automatic transmission fluid, Ford Mercon, now called Mercon V ATF
The M5OD-R1 does NOT have a detachable bellhousing, like your current transmission, so you will need to get an M5OD-R1 that came from a 2.9l or 4.0l engine, and also from a 2 wheel drive.
The 2.9l M5OD is best to match 2.8l gear ratios, but 4.0l is OK
Shifter is in a different spot(couple of inches only) so you can either cut the floor plate a bit or pull the carpet back and install M5OD floor plate
In any case you will want to use a 4.0l flywheel(bolts right to 2.8l crank) and 4.0l clutch setup, not the 2.8l stuff.
And use a 1992 slave for 4.0l, that should have the same hose fitting as 2.8l Master hose.
The 4.0l flywheel and clutch setup is heavier duty than 2.8l or 2.9l, and fits 2.8l and 2.9l.
And you will need manual trans 4.0l starter motor
