RTV vs. Gasket

So, Im chaning the rear diff. fluid soon.

I searched a little bit about gaskets and RTV, and got some mixed reviews about both.

So What do you guys prefer? Which type of RTV would be best?

Also, what type (brand, weight, etc.) of gear oil do you guys like? Would I need a friction additive?

Thanks guys. Figured this would be a decent conversation starter.

Use an oil resistant RTV or Lube Locker gasket. I typically use Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Sealant.

I use Royal Purple gear oil. I don't remember the weight, but it will say in your owner's manual. You only need friction modifier if you have an LS. Most synthetic gear oils don't require a friction modifier. Royal Purple is one of those. Just read the label on the bottle, it will tell you.

If your LSD you ll need the additive. 3.25 quarts and 4oz of LSD additive (if applicable) at work we offer Motorcraft or Mobil 1 75w90. As for gaskets I'd recommend the gasket with a little gasket maker the orange stuff to hold the gasket on so its easier to align the holes.

Hope this helps

Just use normal black RTV and you'll be fine, that's all I've used.
