1350/1354 Doubler Tech

Today I was working on my doubler and thought I would post some pictures up. I bought the doubler already built. I wanted to upgrade the 1350 that is being used as the front range box though. To do this I dismantled my stock electric 1354. I took some comparison pictures to show what is being changed.

These are the planetary assemblies. The left is the 4 gear 1350 planetary, the right is the 6 gear planetary from the 1354. The cover for the 1354 is also thicker around the mating flange which is another plus.

To use the 6 gear planetary from the 1354 in the 1350 case, the shift fork and gear from the 1354 must also be used. This is because the shift gear from the 1354 is larger and thicker then the 1350's. The 1350's fork and gear are on the left again, while the 1354 is on the right. The 1354 is not only larger but it has a better bushing system between the shift fork and gear. The tooth engagement on the 1354's gear is also much larger, its about double that of the 1350.

I just got through doing this swap on my doubler, in fact I just got the doubler back in the truck and drove it last night.

I was having probs with the doubler poping out of gear due to the 1350 shift fork setup -there's a discussion about this over on rrorc

http://rrorc.com/forums/showthread.p...701#post334701

I'm pretty positive that switching to the 1354 planetary and shifter setup is going to cure my doubler shifting problems, plus it's stronger too.

they did, there was a couple companies that made them, but all were pretty small and have since either shut down or stopped making them. Mine is a home made adpater plate.

shouldn't matter. it only depends on what your front range box was originally mated to.

Lord of War:

for clarification, this setup uses one complete transfercase, and the gear reduction unit from a second transfer case mounted between your transmission and the complete transfercase.

there are alternatives to this setup, like a Klune V underdrive, but i don't know if they are available for a ranger application.

i've always wonderer if it were possible to adapt the appropriate peices from a hummer H3 transfer case (BW4494) into into a ranger transfercase... anyone know?

The H3 case wont work. I had one of the BW engineers email me the cad drawing file for that case and its not any where close. Klune doesnt make a setup for us either. Since we have the odd 5 bolt pattern alot of places dont even bother.

Everyone needs to send an email to Jeds....They make a ton of doublers, maybe if they get enough emails they will look into building us one.

The cut down portion of the 1350 bolts to the transmission like a normal Tcase would. The 1354 then bolts to the adapter plate like it would to the transmission normally its just behind the other range box.

So you made your own doubler adapter? Is that using a full length stock shaft or did you make one?

Oh, I see you bought it that way, Have you used it yet? just wondering how it works.

I did the D.D. machine kit, but I don't think you can get one from them anymore, you could find the number by searching and call them.

There is an atlas transfer case that will fit behind a ranger tranny. that'd be the way to go if you had the $.

I have an automatic in mine, a c-5, it works good, but I haven't had it off road too much since I put in the doubler.

From what I can see the shaft in mine is the stock with the threads that were on the end to hold the yoke on a stock tcase cut off.

This is the shaft from my doubler.

Cool, I seriously thought about making my own doubler before I bought the d.d. kit. The extra length using the whole shaft
wouldn't make much difference in my supercab.

But I think going the stock shaft route and having a longer doubler is better and more dependable than the homemade doublers
using press fit and welded shafts, several of which ended up breaking.

I see your even using the stock oil pump, that's cool, most of the doublers out there get rid of the pump.

I figure its not going to hurt anything to keep it in there.
