2001 and up 2.3l and 3.0l will have 5R44E 5-speed
1997 and up 4.0l had 5R55E 5-speed
They look identical, I believe the 5R55E had stronger output shaft

The 5th gear was added using computer(PCM) software, 2nd gear was 1st gear with overdrive engaged, lol, "very clever these Americans"

4R44E(2.3l/3.0l) and 4R55E(4.0l only) were the 4 speeds that were changed to 5 speeds
They had these 4 ratios: 2.47 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75
The 5R's have these 5 ratios: 2.47 / 1.87 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75

1st(2.47) x OD(.75) = 1.86.................the "new" 2nd gear

Since the Bell housings can not be changed without complete disassembly of the transmission, and a 4.0l trans won't bolt to a 3.0l engine, you can't easily swap a 5R44E for a 5R55E, and really no reason to.

One upgrade you can do, and should do, to any Automatic is to add a second transmission cooler.
Heat is what kills automatics, especially the newer ones with electric solenoids inside.
Knocking off a few degrees of heat will add a few years of life, fair trade for under $100, they are not just for towing

Had my trans changed, it was a 5r44e per trans code. It is a 2007 4.0. Motorsport trans 3 year unlimited mileage.

That's odd, 4.0l engine always got the 5R55E, 5R44E were 2.3l and 3.0l only.
They used the same trans code, "T" for the 4R and "D" for the 5R
