I have a 2001 ranger that wont switch into 4 wheel drive no lights no sound was told that its the transfer case switch motor have also been told its the 4x4 control mod the 4 wheel lights come on when you start the truck but the switch dose nothing could someone explain what a live axel is

Live axle means the front axle is always turning.

Your control module could be out, mine went out several years ago.

Are you switching it to 4x4 in neutral?
