painting step bars

i have chrome westin step bars on my truck (or did until last night) I took them off to see what the truck looked like without them. While they are off, I'm thinking about sprying them with some spray-on bed liner. I was wondering if the black pads onthe bars come off, or can I just spray over them?

I'm not sure about the pads. From everything I have seen/read/heard, chrome is very tuff to get anything to stick to. The last thing I read said to dip it to remove the chrome because sanding wasn't gonna do it.

The pads pry off. I had my black bars sprayed with Line-X, they just popped the treads off and put them back on.

I decided to remove the pads by prying them off and try and glue them back when I'm done. I may just go without pads. If i get the spray-on liner to stick, I may prefer not having pads.

well it turns out the pads have four little pers that stick down into the step bar. I broke a few but I think I salvaged enough to reattach the pads later. I was able to clean, prime, and spray one bar tonight. I used Duplicoat Bed Liner. It looks awesome. I can't wait to get the other one done and back on the truck. I also sprayed the front valance.

Now i just need to clean the truck. The valance will probably happen later this weekend.
