Hey,
I was wanting to paint my stock fender flares that came on my 99 Ranger 4x4. I dont like the cheap look of the gray plastic against my black truck. Can I paint them myself without making them look completely horrid? If so, what steps should I take go about doing this. Also, what paint and clear coat would you reccomend.

damn, missed this one...

with the right prep and paint, you can do it yourself...

jsut envolves sanding, primering, painting, and clearing (with plenty of sanding inbetween)

Ive been done, and usually with good results. also you can take them to a painter if you are worried about painting them yourself

 

A self eching primer is usually the best bet for painting plastic. This type of primer allows the plastic to flex some without cracking the paint.

 

Sand down any texture to get a nice smooth finish.

I just painted mine the other day. So far they haven't chipped or anything.
I painted them black with spray paint!!!! Krylon for Plastic. I cleaned them first pretty well. You can't even tell they were painted, and can see the texture of the flares still. So far so good, costed 7$ a can.

Yeah please post some pics. I am still working up the courage to paint mine. Did you primer them before and clear coat them afterwards?

I don't have any pics of the flares, but just posted some pics in the picture forum, i'm going to take some with the paint job, sorry. I did not primer or clear coat because the paint is for plastic and says it "bonds" to it. I did clean them pretty good with a rough nylon brush and hot water. It's still good, no chips, even after spinning some tires in a gravel patch when pulling my friends boat out the other day. I'll post some pics soon. Any other questons?

 

What is the name of the paint you used, and how many coats did you spray on?

It's called Krylon Fusion. I sprayed about 2 coats on, i would spray one then the next and keep going around till they looked good and seemed like enough. Here's the Krylon site for info on the paint: http://krylon.com/main/product_templ...roduct_details

 

my recommendation is go to the interior forum and look at my how-to on interior painting....same concepts....you may want to get a heavier duty paint and clear coat though just to be safe.....

 

I didn't get to take any pics, I have to use my friend's camera.
So far there are no chips or anything and its really hard to get it off with your fingernail, I tried in a non-conspicious area. I'll get pics asap.

 

Get them LINE-X'd thats what I plan on doing in a nice gunmetal grey to sorta mimic what they are now except they're going to be all cool looking with the Line-x coating!

 

That's a good idea, it should stick well too.
