Thunderbolt Mirrors

So I really want signal mirrors and the thunderbolt ones seem to be pretty decent. Only thing is I would have to find some power mirrors for my truck.
Also I like the 06+ style mirrors. If they made a signal mirror glass for the 06+ mirror hands down I would get those.

So what do yall think?

Rwenzing actually posted a link to a heated with signal replacement a little while ago if I remember correctly.

Try this, they have a ranger application with heated and turn. No 2006+ though

Muth's own site lists heated and non-heated signal mirror kits for the newer style 2006~2010 Rangers. The bad news is that the prices are just as steep as earlier years - no surprise there.

For you guys with the 2006~2010 Rangers, why not just go to the junkyard and check out what's available on the 2006~2010 Explorers, Mountaineers and Sport Tracs? Muth lists the same mirror kit part numbers for all four from 2006~2010, so I'd have to say that the stock glass from those years should be interchangeable, too. I would look into that and then come up with a homebrew wiring job to get the rough equivalent of the Muth conversion for a fraction of the cost.

how hard would this mod be to do? i mean splicing wires might not be hard but getting the glass out might be.

Doing a junkyard run tomorrow to see about finding some 01-05 power mirrors along with some other Junkyard mods to be kept under wraps for now.

Anyone know if any other years mirrors will work?

I haven't changed the glass in a 2006+ but I have in a few 2001.5~2005 Rangers and Explorers. Going by what I can see in the Muth instructions, it looks like just about the same procedure.

The glass is bonded to a plastic frame and that frame snaps onto the motorized platform inside the mirror housing. With mine, it only takes a few seconds with an ordinary flat screwdriver to pop it off. I'm probably doing it the "wrong" way but I don't use any heat as shown in the Muth pdf.

Just rock the mirror to the full "UP" and "IN" position to expose a gap under the bottom.

Then insert a flat blade screwdriver in the rectangular opening under the plastic mirror base from the bottom. GENTLY twist the screwdriver to pop the glass carrier off. Takes about 15 seconds once you know how:

Here's what the inside of the housing looks like with the mirror popped off. Notice the two slots at 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock where the anti-vibration springs ride:

Here is the back view of a heated Mountaineer mirror but the original Ranger mirrors and the signal mirrors look similar. You want to pry where shown, NOT at the other rectangular opening that you can see near the lower edge of the mirror:

When reassembling, be sure to line up the anti-vibration springs in their slots. There are 2 in the driver side mirror and 1 in the passenger side mirror. Then just use even pressure to snap the mirror back onto the adjustment platform in the housing.

The earlier 95~2001.5 power mirrors are completely different inside and those can be a more of a PITA to remove without breaking the glass.

That's impossible to say without disassembling the mirror and test fitting it. The aftermarket companies can use any internal mechanism and mounting method that they choose.

I wouldn't waste your money, a lot of guys (myself included) have found the aftermarket mirrors to be no where near OEM quality. I would just either keep on looking or just buy them from TascaParts.com
