Side-view mirror spotlights?

Side-view mirror spotlights?
So I've noticed that a lot of those FJ losers have small, front-facing signal lights on their side mirrors. I've heard that a lot of guys like to replace the bulbs and do some wiring reruns to turn them into impromptu spotlights. This is something I'd be interested in doing, myself, and had been toying around with it some.
Then I got pulled over a few nights ago and noticed that the cop had a better looking setup going on with his cruiser. From whatever mysterious place that departments can buy all that cool **** he had gotten some side-views with full size and very off road-esque looking spots built in. He wouldn't let me get out and look at them closer, but from what I could see it was pretty cool. Something like that would be ideal for late night trailing as the cant of the mirrors would shine a pretty wide beam. And it looks awesome.
I realize it's impractical, and considering I already have some spots behind the grill and on the safari bar it isn't necessary, but it's something I at least wanted to ask about. Also of note is that I am a very impractical person. I was thinking about sanding the front of the mirror housing down to a flat surface and affixing some old baja lights I had to them. Running the wires into the door into the cab/hood from there. Would anyone else happen to have seen something like this? Does anyone even understand what I'm trying to explain?
Thanks for reading, in any case.
