so i've gotten 2 fix-it tickets for window tint in the past 2 months... i'm getting my tint removed today so i can get the tickets signed off, but then i'm getting the tint put back on right after.

my main concern is a buddy of mine said he thinks that if you get 3 fix-it tickets for the same thing, the 3rd one isnt just a fix-it... its like a big fine that you have to pay in addition to fixing it. is this true? i've never heard anything about that... i was under the impression that a tint fix-it is a non-moving violation, and i could basically keep getting fix-it tickets, and as long as i get it fixed each time i'm not in any danger of being slapped with some whopper ticket.

I think you can get as many fix it tickets without any real tickets but thats in wi might vary state to state.

 

5% all around I'm assuming? and does that mean you have it on your windshield? 5% is nice if you never have to back up or look behind you to change lanes but I cant see out my back window at night and its only 35% I dont know how you do it.... just take it off and go up so you dont have to worry about the fine

 

I think in maine after 3 tickets you become an obitohual enfender (spl) and then they really give you a big ticket. Most cops here will pull it them selfs or watch you do it. Its the same for over sized tires. If you get more then three tickets then you go to court. Its really bad up here.

 

nope... my windshield is untinted... but i have 5% on my fronts, rears, and back window. it is definitely dark when i'm backing up at night, but you kinda get used to it. my entire interior is also painted, so i wanted the tint to be dark to protect the interior as much as possible. i'm most likely not getting limo on the front sides again, i might go to dark, and then medium if i still get ticketed.

 

Why on earth would you tear the tint off and then pay to put it right back on again? Were I the police in your area, I would take pleasure in pulling you over every time I felt the urge just to check your tint.. and see what other fines I could creatively come up w/.

The local tint shops must LOVE you..

Second i have 5% to and its not as dark as people think when you have it your eyes get used to adjusting to it.
Third get 15% on the front 2 cops will be less likely to pull you over if they see you have a lighter tint on the front.
fourth my friend has the 5/15 setup its just as dark when looking back to wear the people are sitting however, you are abke to see through the front windshield when looking from say the gas tank up through the front door windows.

 

I agree. Leave the 5% on the back window and 2 rear sides and go with something a little lighter on the front 2. I have 20% on the front to and the rears are just a shade darker and I don't have any problems.

 

good thing youre not a cop in my area then... we have enough cops that are a$$holes for no reason, definitely wouldnt need another ;o)

and in case you didnt read the above post... i AM planning on getting it lighter when its retinted... and if i still get pulled over, i'll get it redone lighter still. bottom line is i want my fronts tinted, and i'll keep trying until i find a balance that doesnt irk the local cops too much. i will miss the limo tint tho... so sexy :o)



my sister and my mom have medium tint all around on their cars and theyve never had a problem, and my dad has dark all around... he actually got a fix-it for the dark on his way to laughlin a couple weeks ago too heh. quite a few buddies of mine have limo in the back and medium up front, which was how i had it on my last ranger, and them or i never got hassled for that...

 

2% all the way around here and no problems. Driving at night is a bit of a trouble some times but thats what I bought power windows for.

Actually Texas is worse. It is 35%

 

In defense of the cops.....I have never seen anyone get pulled over just for tint, unless they were doing something else. There is another side to the whole tinted front windows story that NO one seems to consider which is officer safety. Most of my family is in law enforcement, yes some of them have very lightly tinted front windows, and deal with this issue regularly. One good reason I see for not allowing really dark tint on the front windows is allowing officers to see what's going on in the car as the approach after pulling someone over. Just my two cents, personally it sounds pretty childish to go pull tint off and keep puttin it on but hey, if you are willing to waste that kinda money then go for it...... To each his own I guess.

Im very aware of the reason for the law and any time I get pulled over I put both windows down and have both hands on the wheel when he comes up so thats not an issue.(I also throw the dome light on for them at night)

here it's 30 but where i got my tint done, TPD gets theirs done so he basically told me that the 15 i have on there now they won't mess with me. He tints the cops personal cars as well, and they get limo or darker on both the cop cars as well as their personal cars so i don't have any problems here. when i go home to alabama, i make it a point to drive with my windows down at night because i don't want any problems.

my tint has a lifetime warranty but it doesn't cover the fact that it's illegal and if i have to get it redone he won't cover it.

i also have metallic tint, more expensive, so it reflects the sun and makes the tint look darker than it is. depending where and how you look at my truck you can't see in it at all.

 

I got a ticket yesterday for my tint on my front windows and i wasnt doing anything esle wrong. The cop pulled up in the lane next to me at a red light, then when it turned green and i started driving he dropped back and pulled me over. I have about 35% tint i think, its not even that dark...Gutta love NH...

i have 5% all the way around, excluding windshield, but the power windows come in handy. I couldn't count how many times i had to roll my window down because a cop snuck up behind me. Now with winter coming up, I'm sure there will be a few tix.

 

I've been seen peeps with only the upper third with it radius down the front part in the vertical tinted. This leaves the lower part of the glass open and your able to see your side mirrors from the drivers seat.

 

They changed it here in OK. Someone got ticked that the cops had super dark tint and they couldn't so it went to court. Now we can have the same as the cops. :)

 

anyone know what it is in oregon??? im planning on going with the 5% just wondering if i would be legal.

Chapter 815

815.221
Tinting; authorized and prohibited materials; certificate.

(1) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person may apply tinting material to the windows of a motor vehicle in compliance with this section.

(2) Tinting material may be applied to the side and rear windows of a motor vehicle if:
(a) The tinting material has a light transmittance of 50 percent or more;
(b) The tinting material has a light reflectance of 13 percent or less; and
(c) The total light transmittance through the window with the tinting material applied
is 35 percent or more.

(3) Tinting material that has a lower light transmittance or produces a lower total
light transmittance than permitted in subsection
(2)(a) and (c) of this section may be applied to the top six inches of a windshield.
Tinting material may not be applied to any other portion of the windshield.

(4) Tinting material that has a lower light transmittance or produces a lower total
light transmittance than permitted in subsection (2)(a) and (c) of this section may be
applied to all windows of a multipurpose passenger vehicle that are behind the driver.
This subsection applies only to vehicles that are equipped with rearview mirrors on each
side of the vehicle. The windows as tinted shall meet the requirements for AS-3 glazing
material established by federal regulation. For purposes of this subsection, a “multipurpose
passenger vehicle” is a motor vehicle with motive power that is designed to carry 10 or fewer persons and is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation.

(5) Tinting material that has a lower light transmittance or produces a lower total
light transmittance than permitted in subsection (2)(a) and (c) of this section may be applied to the side and rear windows of a vehicle registered in the name of a person, or the person's legal guardian, if the person has an affidavit signed by a validly licensed physician or optometrist stating that the person has a physical condition requiring window tinting that produces a lower light transmittance than allowed by this section. The affidavit required by this subsection shall be kept in the vehicle and shall be shown to a police officer who inquires about the tint.

(6) There are no light transmittance requirements for glazing materials applied to AS-3 type windows.

(7) The following types of tinting material are not permitted:
(a) Mirror finish products.
(b) Red, gold, yellow, amber or black material.
(c) Tinting material that is in liquid preapplication form and is brushed or sprayed on.

(8) Each person who installs window tinting material in compliance with this section shall give the person who requested the installation a certificate stating:
(a) The name and address of the person who installed the tint;
(b) The light transmittance of the tinting material;
(c) The light reflectance of the tinting material; and
(d) That the total light transmittance through each window with the tinting material
applied is not less than 35 percent.

(9) The certificate issued under subsection (8) of this section shall be kept in the motor vehicle and shall be shown to a police officer who inquires about the tint.

(10) Prohibitions and penalties related to the standards established under this section are provided under ORS 815.222. [1995 c.263 §2; 2003 c.158 §8]

815.222
Illegal window tinting; penalty.

(1) A person commits the offense of illegal window tinting if the person applies window
tinting material that does not comply with ORS 815.221 or applies window tinting material
to a window of a motor vehicle that is not authorized by ORS 815.221 to be equipped with window tinting material.

(2) A person commits the offense of operating a vehicle with illegal window tinting if the person operates a vehicle registered or required to be registered in Oregon that is equipped with window tinting material that is not in compliance with or authorized by
ORS 815.221.

(3) Each offense described in this section is a Class B traffic violation.

I know fix-it tickets were really expensive in NC. They'd rather give you an equipment violation then a speeding ticket because it cost more. And if in doubt it will cost you lots of money the third time. If you're going to go through the trouble of having it removed and reinstalled just to have it happen again just have legal tint put on it this time.
