depends on how many coats your do, i never did much prep for my wheels or toolbox just sprayed on, the toolbox didnt hold up well with some dirt on it but the wheels looked good until i got a set of tires mounted on them a couple weeks ago, i would touch them up but ive got a nother set that i painted. a word of advice is if you wanna do a toolbox or a large surface, use multiple coats, itll be easier to pull off when you want it to come off

As far as taking it off it pretty much just peels off.

Did it!!
Got the rocker's done the way I was planning to. I did it because of hardcore rock chipping from many many gravel road speed runs and the very common boot bump paint rub. Ran into a snag because I didn't really think the product through. lol. I let the product dry fully after 2 medium thickness coats then I peeled the masking tape off. Oh well. lol. I only did the driver's side...so I'll see how well it holds up to my knees rubbing up against it when leaning into the double lifted truck. I may peel it all off and shoot real paint on it. Black.
Overall, pretty darn neat product this Plasti-Dip stuff is. I'm happy ya'll enlightened me to it. I was planning on stick-on no-skid tape on the rockers before I found out about this product. Cheap way to see if an idea is feasible...and is completely reversible without any residue.
The key to spraying this stuff with accuracy using masking tape.... Spray 1 medium-thick coat, then peel off your tape. If you let it dry, the overlap on the tape will be part of the "membrane", and peel the coating off with the tape. My lower bed in front of the wheelwell shows this. The rest of the tape line was xacto knife'd prior to peeling. The cut-off isn't too perfect, and there are some peeling edges. I'm confident with peeling the tape off while the paint is wet, the line will be crisp and perfect.
The mishap. lol.
