I did the same with my truck. My rims were completely shot. Pitted,peeling,and just generally nasty looking,so a little sanding and some black paint did the trick too.
Mine have been painted since about August,and they've been abused offroad and also had a new set of tires installed,so the paint got all chipped around the edges during the tire swap, but they look better than what they were before. I've got a set of FX4 Alcoas on the way though.

Here's another set of rims I painted. These were 17" brushed aluminum Cadillac Escalade rims. They had some road rash and some pitting beginning,so I decided to paint them,using the proces described above.

After paint. And the green and black on the body was also done by rattle cans. $120 paint job. Haha.
