Icon5 Who knows Window Tint??

I'm pretty excited, this is my first "New Thread" since I joined last week! Love the forum, but I didn't see any threads about window tint.

My ranger (02 FX4 Extended Cab, sorry, pics soon), has the factory tinted rear door windows. Does anybody know the percentage that these windows are tinted? I want to do tint all the way around the truck (only an eyebrow on the windshield of course) but I want everything to match up right. I'm guessing it's somewhere in the range of 20%, but I can't really tell.

Thanks for the help, and hopefully this thread can help some other newcomers, too.

Yeah just go 20% on the front. Thats what most people do. Or either 5% all the way around, but I dont think your gonna want it that dark.

can't, only mods can delete threads...

i would go into a tinting/glass shop and ask them what % it is, they usually have a light meter to test it with... i would also ask them what they think would look good on the sides... i wouldn't go as dark as the back... just because you look out the side windows to see what is going on around, while driving, and in some areas, the front windows are illegal to tint... here, nothing forward of the driver's ear can be tinted...

Yeah here in Colorado the back windows can go as dark as we want, and the driver and passenger windows can only be 27% or higher, with a strip 4 inches or smaller on top of the windshield. With my old Dakota and the Firebird I just sold I had 20% and 15% all the way around. The cops never gave me any trouble about it either time I got pulled over. I'll prob just try to match the rear windows at 20% or so.

Just get 5% and be done with it. No regrets later on. In all seriousness you should think about having your whole windshield tinted. It may sound crazy but it helps cut down alot of sun rays and even headlight glare at night. You can still see out just fine as if it was never there

i've heard a lot of people doing this, they usually do something like 15% on the back windows, 25% on D/P doors and 40% on windsheld, so there is contrast between the windows that you are allowed to have tinted, and the ones you are not, so if you get questioned, you can say "it just looks like they are tinted, because the back ones are so dark"

i am fairly sure that up here, you can tint to ANY darkness, as long as it is behind the driver's ear

you see a lot of cargo vans with the back windows spray painted white from the inside (thus creating the same tint as a panel van)

I'll probably end up going with 15% again. Still going to put some thought to it though..

in FL you can go as dark as you want to on all the rear windows, but can not exceed 25% on the driver/passenger windows, and you must also have both a driver/passenger mirror.
windshield is maximum of 6" strip of 25% on top only. and the police in FL are aggressive about pulling over people with over tinted windows.

of course, if you have any form or risk of skin cancer, you can get your ALL your windows tinted just about as dark as you want.

hhmmnn...
seems to be a varying degree of whats allowed here in FL :)
what I posted was told to me by a cop, so... he might have just been talking in an "offhand" manner. although I shouldnt have said "in FL" I should have said "where I live/lived"
Im originally from Naples, but now live in Lake Placid.
Naples police will pull you over for anything possible they can, and LP is small enough the police dont have a lot to do. although I have friends in other places around the state who all have been pulled over at one time or another for their tint, even friends who have legal tint.

anyways, Im running 5 in my back window (not like you can see it though...) and 2.5 on my side windows. no tint on my drv/psgr and no tint strip, but that will change soon as I am going to remove the side tint and redo it along with a light tint on the D/P and an as dark as I can get away with strip on the front.

My Ranger had 14% on the rear and Xcab side windows. I got matching 14% on the drivers and passengers side windows. Law here is nothing tinted from the driver forward, but it's a slack law. The kids with the rice cars and the retards doing burnouts in public parking lots get the tickets. If you draw attention to yourself (music blaring, bass pounding, revving your engine, ect,) you deserve what you get.

My g/f has had 5% tint on her Civic for over 7 years with no issues. She deals with police on a daily basis for work. It's who your are and what you do that brings negative actions.

gotta disagree here .... yes imports get pulled over more especially if they have exhaust

but the last tint ticket i got in my truck i was simply driving down a city street and made a right turn, chp happened to be coming the other way and pulled me over.

yea I dont care what your driving, If there on the prowl you will get stopped. Ive had them coming the opposite way going 55+ and they bust a U turn just for tint. It pisses me off when a GSP gives me a ticket when his is just as dark as mine. F that man! HHmmm i wonder how many tint tickets ive actually had in the last 5 or so years

it also depends on who writes the ticket... some cops have a stick up their *** about tint, other have a stick up their *** about speeding, others, wrong coloured turn signals... the bottom line is, if it's illegal, and you know that going into it, just be prepaired to pay the ticket if you get that 1 cop that hates window tint...

you can get a cop who will give you a warning for speeding, every time, but if you have covers on your headlights, you will get a ticket for it... the other thing is, police often have blitzes, which could be 2 different things, 1) the sargeant says go out and write as many tickets you can, or 2) the sargeant says go out and write tickets for burnt out headlights as much as possible for the next month...

i've got friends who have been pulled over for something, had a cop, referring to something else, go "pfft whatever, no one cares about that..." and gotten pulled over 2 weeks later and gotten a ticket for it...

well here the city and county cops will usually only mess with you for a moving violation or if you have burnt out lights

chp will pull you over for any stupid damn thing

Here in CO I've been pulled over twice with 15% all around tint on my Firebird. Once it wasn't mentioned, once I got a warning for it. My brother has 18% all around and hasn't had any trouble in 5 years. My gf rolls 20% on her Mazda 3, and is a more aggressive driver than me. Yet somehow she gets away with everything. Damn those hot asian girls..
