Bumper Color ?

The new Custom 4x4 Fabrication Ranger rear bumper project is almost finished.
The new brackets are on their way and it will be the last thing needed to make it fit correctly and then on to painting.
I was thinking Line-X but not right now, so I am thinking Black, easy color, easy choice right, NOT !

Here is how it sat after last fitting, new brackets are on their way to raise it 1.25”.

I am going to paint my bumper.
A friend will professionally spray both the front and back bumper inside and out.
Start with a DuPont Professional Metal Etching Primer, then I want to spray it black, my dilemma is what level of gloss to make it.

1) Glossy as he!!

2) Semi-Gloss, so someone will thing I just didn’t polish it

3) Flat, there is no polishing

4) Somewhere in between - please specify

Tthere is also the Line-X thing BUY I am in a Better Business Dispute with them and I don’t think I will get a good job done.

id send it out to have it line-x'd

and you need to raise it up, that gap looks horrible on such a nice bumper.

How the selling of the truck going… I haven’t seen anything ?

I am thinking semi-gloss or satin, which I think are the same thing.
My next problem will be can I get a satin clear to finish things off ?

thanks for the postings.

Here is an idea.

Try some flat black primer. If you don't like the look, then go over the primer with your glossy finish coat.

Just picked up some Chassis Saver Satin Black, will give it a try after I figure out if it needs a primer coat.

I agree with satin. Chassis Saver doesn't stick very well to new metal... I've had good luck sandblasting new metal before using it though so it has something to bite0 in to.

thanks, I was thinking sandblasting but was wondering about primer.
I got the can of chassis saver yesterday but have not read the label, will do today.
$30qt + taxes but maybe I should have tried the metal etching and then satin black with a standard automotive paint.

I guess I am still thinking.

As long as you can get it to stick it's worth the cash. Are you spraying it or brushing it?

I was thinking brush but spray is a thought.

Still up in the air, sand blasting is a must to clean up the steel but the painting process. goes eon.

My blaster cabinet may not be large enough.

Stain black is going to be the color, now to get it blasted.

Don't forget the grease and wax stripper before you paint.

If you're spraying it Chassis Saver has it's own reducer... pretty sure it's S8 or something like that.

Thanks for all the input.
When it is painted and installed I will post the finish up for all to read and see.

Taylor, I use Prepsol (sp), that stands for Preparation Solvent !
Applied before painting and also before bondo.

Something you may not have considered......

Years ago I had a wheel done for a friend we bead blasted it for a satin uniform finish and then powdercoated it with clear. Looked really neat and was a very tough finish.

Bare steel, sort of a titanium color.
Sounds good but which ever painting process I use there will need to be a metal etching process done first where the metal is treated/painted with a chemical that not only makes the paint stick better but also helps with rust reduction if chips or cracks happen.
