Icon7 New to rangers

My name is Brian Maxwell. Turning 18 in July. I'm into small American cars. I have a 1988 Pontiac fiero formula v6 5 speed with 37k. Sold the last 1984 fiero.

I've been wanting a truck for awhile. I'm a landscaper and the fiero isn't cutting it. I'm buying my first truck (ranger) on saturday from my girl friend of 2 years grandma. Her grandpa past away leaving his green 2002 ford ranger 2.3cyl 2wd with only 31k miles. Not rust on body, detailed, engine looks new, body looks new interior is clean with a smoke smell I've been trying to get out. Truck has been detailed and comes with a bed cover.Pretty much a new truck.Should last me a long time.
I'm buying the truck on Friday or Saturday. Pretty excited, been test driving it daily on highway and city. Performing very well. I'm surprised on how well the 2.3 performs.

I'm on fiero forums a lot and love the community at fiero.nl. I hope this forum is as good or better with the responses and questions I or other people have.I'm glad to see there are people helping one an other trying to make their trucks or cars the way they want them to be. I know with my fiero i have helped tons of people and have been helped many times.

I'm going to start with my questions here so i can get to know some of you.
I live in Medina Ohio. Little south of Cleveland.

I want to invest in a 3" body lift for larger tires. I have a 2.3 4cyl so i cant go to big without re-gearing. I'll have to adjust my speedo.
I have read stock you can fit 33's. But I'm not into being unknown of my tires fitting and hitting the inner fenders on bumps so I'm raising it 3".

I want to keep stock rims. What tire size do you recommend with a 4cyl, and a 3" lift?

I'm thinking 31-10.5-15

Stock tires come out to 225/70/15 = 27.4x8.9/15

Should i go 32's? I'm not looking to loose to much power and don't want to bogg down any. Just love the look of raised trucks and larger tires.

If it comes down to it. Whats the average cost of re-gearing to...I think its 4.10? Will this dramatically help or not.

One thing i don't want is to loose speed on highway. :)

Thanks for reading/looking. I'll post a picture of the truck soon.;D

Welcome.

I have the 2.5L and am running 31's right now with a 3" body lift . Today I just got done re-gearing to 4.10. I guess I did not have to but was having problems in the deep stuff and going up hills. I was also having a hard time keeping my speed at 70 on the highway if there was a head wind. Only cost me about $130 to swap in the 8.8 rear end with the 4.10 in it. I dont think you can fit 33's stock on your truck man.

Thanks guys. I'm really looking forward to getting this truck.
I think once i get it, i might hit up some country roads and just go.

What are your guy's favorite truck/ranger websites? (To buy from). Say, exterior, tool boxes and such.

Welcome Brian! I'll try to answer some of your questions for you.

I think you'll like a 32" tire the best with a 3" body lift, it won't stuff the wheel wells like 33s and wont look weird like 31s will look, though Roberts truck is an exception and looks good with a 3" BL and 31s, so check his threads/pictures. Also, go with an all-terrain if you are a landscaper, no highway terrain bullsh*t. BFGoodrich All-Terrain is your best bet, I love mine.

The gearing, I'm not sure about. Wait for one of the more, um, mechanically advanced people on the site to chime in.

And yes, post some pictures. I'm curious as to what wheels you have on that thing. If you have teardrop wheels, paint 'em black!

welcome, with a 4 cyl i would go with 31's, any bigger, and you will have to worry about re-gearing, and speedo adjustments, here is my 2wd on 31's, it would look good with a`3" BL, mine had no lift

Hey guys, Just an update on the truck.. Dont have it yet. Most likely getting it this week. Been working on it tho. Getting that smoke smell out. Cant believe how strong that smell was for the cars age and miles. But i used a lot of products on the upholstery and its seems like its gone. Now it just smells like cleaning products with a tiny bit of smoke... ha

Only a handful of 1984 fieros went into flames.. My first fiero was an 84 so i was a bit skeptical. But my 88 formula is far from an 84. To bad I'm selling it after i get this truck. :( I'll miss it badly.

I figured I'll wait a little on most everything i want to do to this truck. Except i might go ahead and install a in dash GPS/head unit. I need a GPS for landscaping so i might as well go an extra 100-200 and get indash/gps cluster.

Oh and another thing I'm doing right away is installing power locks :)

I'll take pictures of the truck and my fiero tomorrow after my exam.. Yeah, Almost out of school. :P
