good article...but the cams are very poor for this engine. 183/192 duration with decent lift at .472...

Worthy of a sticky, at least for the time being.

Welp...looks like I have some work to do on the spare engine...

Great link! I have previously spoken with SuperSix on heads for the SOHC and got quoted around $1100 for heads ported and polished with the big valves. That was last year though.

Anyone have any thoughts on the whole "having to reflash or reprogam the ECM with a cold air intake?" I have one on the truck now and definitely some noticable power gains and smoother running motor, but the gas mileage has had a neutral to very minor negative effect. Wondering if this is an issue on the Rangers as well.

I guess what I'm wondering is if any of the programming for the air management is at all similar between the two systems. Even with a different motor and different PCM it is possible that there are similarities. Does anyone know how the motor is adversely affected by a cold air intake and no reprogramming on the 05s?

was the chip the handheld bamachip type. if not you're not going to get much for your money. 399.00 and approx. 40-50 hp increase for the bama. 15 hp for others. see bamachips or explorerexpress sites for purchase. didnt know k&n made an intake manifold. if that's what you're talking about. forget the fancy tube and cone filter. use a k&n filter in stock box and drill hole through bottom of box approx 3 inch dia. and insert a piece of pvc pipe with elbow at bottom. plenty of cool air and flows better than the 'pretty' and expensive air inductions tubes. install a throttle body spacer, larger throttle body and upgraded mass air flow sensor assembly along with 160 degree thermostat. close to 75-80+ hp gain with all of these mods. fuel mileage not adversely affected. must use 91 octane with bama programmer to get full effect of upgrade.

My freind and his dad own Super Six motorsports, they are located in Warner Robbins, GA and have some very nice cars and trucks fast as hell to be honest. They also built a SCORE truck a year or so ago, and have been asked to be on PINKS as well so they know there **** pretty good. Just figured id blab about it... sorry !

Its wierd about the rods. Their stock length is 5.7inches.. guess what a Small Block Chevies is?

Having a 3.980 bore, going .020 over ( common practice ) puts the bores at 4.000 inches.. checking for wrist pin applications, theres a whole world out there.

Its DEFINETLY a very moddable engine, but timing the cams REALLY sucks if you dont get it right the very first time.

It has longer rods because the 4.0L is a 60 deg and the SBC is 90. If it had more stroke it wouldn't be 1.7 liters smaller. Rod length doesn't determine stroke. And at 9.7:1 compression you would be stupid to put 8 PSI through it. 5 would be the max with out o-ringing the block and using a copper gasket.

Didn't the compression in the stock SOHC change around '03 or something? I could have sworn my '01 is only supposed to be 9.0:1, not 9.7:1. No change in HP and TQ ratings through those years either though, it's always intrigued me a little.

EDIT: Looking at the spec's again, There is a slight HP change, from 207 or so to 210 with the compression increase.

I had the 4.0L Mustang V6, 2006. Those cars were known to throw check engine lights after almost any mod unless you had a tuner to adjust the computer. Most places that sell CAI kits for the mustangs now offer them bundled with tuners, preloaded with settings, the Rangers shouldnt have that problem though, we have lot less electronics hooked up to our engines, hell the mustang even has drive by wire.

I'm glad the Ranger still has a cable throttle. I've driven Audi's with the throttle by wire and the peddle can never keep up with my foot and the ride is real choppy untill I figure it out and have one more thing to judge in advance....

So does anyone know what the 2.3L stroker would bump the power to?

What would cams alone do? Increase HP and torque or just one?
