So here's the deal... I'm looking at upgrading the gears here pretty soon. Currently running 3.73s w/ 4.0 L V6 and 33" tires. I'll probably have the 33s for awhile (unfortunately) but DO plan on going up to 35s eventually.... I'm just trying to figure out if it's better to take two hits and go 4.10 not until I have 35s then upgrade to 4.56 or if I can get away with 4.56 now without any added stress to the engine. Any other solution would be great to. Thanks!

Go ahead and do 4.56's just in case you ever DO decide to go taller.

 

your engine isn't what you have to worry about.. its the transmission or clutch.

I ran 4.10s with 33s for a year.. Ran 35s on 3.50s for 4-5 months too, and that suckedddd

4.10s should be fine, i say save your money until you have the tires then bump the gears up.

 

4.56 right off the bat.

 

It also depends on what kind of driving you do. Me, I'll be doing mostly highway so I'm sticking with my 4.10's. But if you do a majority of city driving then 4.56's would be better for you.

 

im runnin 33's and 3.73's and its not bad. however i would atleast run a 4.10 with a 35. but 4.56 should be perfect for 35's(barring your not gonna run a 35x16 bogger!) and yeah do them at the same time. its chaotic but worth it.

 

Definitely go with 4.56's. You'll be amazed at the new found power, or at least I was.

 

Daily driving for my truck is 50% city and 50% freeway so I can't really factor those in since one way or the other I'll lose. I've had this setup for a year and I really miss the get-up-and-go... I don't want to spend the extra money on 2 sets of gears so I'm leaning heavily towards 4.56s but I didn't wanna do something that'll cause more damage to the truck either....

 

If you're going to drop that much money on gears, it's worth jumping to the 4.56's. You'll thank yourself later.

 

Agreed, especially if you are paying someone else to do it. Either way, gear installs are not very fun.

^^ Actually Shane mentioned that... I'm not paying for 'em, my parents are (hopefully) getting them for me for Christmas.... still working on convincing my dad that I'm NOT geared correctly as is.... Either way I did tell them about yours.

 

I would run 4.56 with the 33s if it were me. You aren't going to hurt anything, I don't know why you think you would.
I ran 4.88s with 33s on the sport trac over a year and it worked great. I started wishing I had 4.56 when I moved here and the speed limits on the freeway are 70mph.
Anyway, I still definitely say 4.56 for 33s, you will love it and they will still work alright with 35s.

 

I was told it would push my RPMs too high at freeway speeds if I had 4.56s... sounds like that's not the case though...

 

5 speed 4.10 and 33 will be like 2400-2500 at 70
5 speed 4.56 and 33 will be like 2700-2800 at 70

youll be fine with 4.56 and 33's. youll lose a little in freeway economy over 4.10 but not over 3.73 id guess

 

I'm just excited to get 5th gear back.... hehe

 

I have some stock 4:10s for sale if u decide to go that route

 

go with 4:56 marie and never look back! trust me you wont regret it. my re-gear to 4:56 was the best thing performance wise i ever did to mine.

 

4.10s would be a waste of money stepping up from 3.73s in my opinion. Waaay too much to spend for such a small difference.

 

I do agree with you if new/used gearsets were to be installed in her existing axles. Going through all that trouble, go to the perfect gear anyway.

The whole 4.56 thing...I put far too much thought into it. 4.56 and 33 would be very very similar to my 4.88 and 35....which is perfect in driveability, great freeway mpg's that people don't believe, awesome in-town zippyness.

I had 3.73's, until today i got 4.88 Yukons front and rear, and so far, just from the drive home it's MILES ahead of where i was with the 3.73's, it's awesome what a gear swap does for a truck. I have 35's though, i was originally thinking about going with 4.56, but i'm glad i went 4.88.
