So I hooked up my new door speakers. Everything is wired right. I've double checked all my wiring multiple times. But my problem is, when I first had them hooked up, I hooked them up to the front channels and only the right side worked. So I thought, maybe the front left channel is bad. So I moved it to the rear channel and it worked fine. Well I didn't want one speaker on the front channel and one speaker on the rear channel so, I hooked the other one up to the other rear channel. Everything worked great right? Wrong.. It worked for about 5 minutes and then that front left speaker stopped working again when I moved my amp back under my seat. Any idea as to what could be wrong here? It's really pissing me off now and I'm tired of messing with it. Help me! Thanks

Ok Korey I'll write this so you can understand it....

I have a Rockford P400.4 amp and two component 6.5" door speakers. I hooked everything up how it's supposed to be and the front left speaker didn't work so I hooked it up to the rear channel and it worked. At this time I had come to the conclusion that my front left channel was bad. I decided to move both speakers to the rear channels. Upon moving the speakers to the rear channels I had to re-tune them. After doing that I went to slide my amp back under my seat and when I did that the front left speaker stopped working again. I checked all my wiring multiple times and nothing is loose or anything like that.

 

Only thing I can think of is you have a loose connection with something on your amp. Check your RCA's where they're connected to the headunit too even tho that probably isn't the problem. Did you buy the amp new or used? Are only your front speakers amped?

 

It was a floor model amp. It's scratched as fvck but it works.....kinda LOL I checked my RCA's behind the dash and they're fine.

 

maybe some pics? do you have a ddm? you can check for a short in your wire and speaker. take the wires off the amp and test.

do you have any protection indicators on your amp, are they lit? if they light up without speakers connected then you burned up a transistor or a few in the amp.

 

Pics of what? No warning lights have lit up on the amp. The amp was/is working fine, it's just the fact that it stops giving power to that one speaker. I'm thinking it's something messed up with my RCA's.

 

Oh and only my front speakers are amp.

Simple to check for rcas is just to swap channels.
it could also be the amps crossover switch. if they don't get moved for a while they tend to oxidize and can cause the speakers to cut out. flipping them back and forth a few times will clear the contacts.

 

Crossover switch? Maybe I'm just that much of a noob but I'm 99% sure my amp doesn't have a crossover switch.

 

it may not, not all do. (also known as highpass/lowpass switch)
but i would think you would have something like that on a rockford. for low pass filtering atleast.

 

Well yea I have that. It's set on "all pass" right now. That still wouldn't explain why only one of the two front speakers is working.

 

okay go out an flip with the rcas and flip the crossover switch a few times while music is playing at low vol. see if you can hear if its trying to kick back on... also while your out there disconnect the speakers after you do that stuff. and try your right channel on the left side outputs. you might also have to "reset" your amp also to turn off any protection that may have tripped. that is done by removing the power wire for about 10 mins.

 

I'll give it a try. This is irritating me. The more I work on it the more it bothers me and the more time I take a break from it, the more it's got me wondering.

 

another thing you can try if you suspect the rcas is if you have a 1/8mini plug to RCA cable and an ipod hook those up to your amp see if it works then. that would eliminate the headunit's output stage and the rca cable you have..

 

Well I just unhooked the amp, double checked my wires, hooked the amp back up, put the right speaker on one of the front channels, the left speaker on one of the rear channels, and it worked. To be honest, I think it's my Ipod connection. I bought the cheap one off Ebay instead of buying the nicer one and I've always had problems with it.

 

you dumbass why didn't you try it with the radio or a cd? and it probably is the ipod connector. I bought a cheap one for my old headunit off ebay and it wound up doing the same thing, you would have to like put the ipod in a weird position to get it to work on both channels.

 

it was probably a ground. seeing that you unhooked everything and hooked it back up. electrical problems always = ground

Buy an actual name brand one idiot they work so much better

 

The only reason I bought the one I did was because my headunit didn't come with all the wires and I needed one for cheap.

 

I never skimp out on wiring. It's as crucial to your system as the components your connecting them to.
