Alright. So, Saturday, I broke the plow on the tractor. sheered a retaining pin off. So, I asked my buddy Art (Mr Undependable) to stop by and see about tackin it back on. Well I decided, Ima see if I cant do this. How hard can it be right? So, I plugged in the machine,. got two scraps 1/4in. and then started out at like what i think is 90 amps. has 2 big pins in the side of the welder, and u move them to correspond with the amperage. its an industrial welder thats older than most here.

so, the rod im using is 6010 and 90 wasnt enuff, so i keep bumping it up... finally up around 200 im actually getting somewhere. and im goin along, and got the two pieces stuck together, and just over all, playing with it... so Art stops over.. Hes been a mechanic for 8yrs says he knows how to weld... we set it up, and hes worse than me! unfortunately i didnt have him test himself out on scrap... so now, the pin has a huge gaping hole in it where it connects to the plow rail, and hes like 'thatll be fine' itll sheer off. its almost gaurenteed. like 20% of the pin right at the base is GONE. so, two questions...

1) can i fill that hole with something?

2) if i cant fill the hole and use it, and it breaks, how big of a btch is it going to be to drill out the pin and stuff so I can put in either a grade 8 bolt or a new pin?

wait do you need welding tips or plow repair tips?

 

D is right... when stick welding you need to know the properties of your rod and make sure your polarity is correct... otherwise you're wasting time.

And how big/expensive is this pin? Seems to me it would be better to replace the pin if neither you nor your friend are competent weldors.
