Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, so if it is not let me know where it should go and I will move it. This is an Idea for a bed/over cab rack I hope to build someday soon for my 96' stepside. I drew it up in google sketch up. They're not too detailed yet, just some proof of concept sketches for now. I posted some older versions of this over at ORR if it looks familiar. The idea is to use this as a basic frame that will have mounting points scattered around it to hook mounts and holders for different things to it. Stuff like jerry cans, Hilift jack, spare tires, tools etc. So I wont have to drag a bunch of extra weight in equipment around all the time only when I need it. Let me know what you think.

I like it....ALOT!! I'd probably add something like a rail between the front and rear mounts, where it mounts to the bed...like below. But it is very well designed. I like it!!

You have added acouple of extra bars but its nearly identical overall.

I have had a couple of those for about 5 years and one of them may have saved my life and the other one tore up the bed of the truck pretty good.

I had a car in front of me crash and I swerved to miss and the guy behind me did too but he was carring 50 sheets of aluminum roofing and they tore through his 6 straps and if my rack hadn't stopped them they would have taken my head off.

The other one has been overloaded too many times and it has torn the bed below the rail on the sides just below the cab, I know it is my fault but just a warning about loading them up too much. It even has full length side rail caps between the front and rear posts.

Your design looks much stronger with the tube additions but its the bed rails that can't handle too much load.
