head gasket failure?

hey fellas. well i got rid of my ranger and about a month ago i purchased a 92 super coupe from my friend. she said the head gaskets were replaced by her bf about 4k miles ago then she bought a new mustang so the sc was parked for almosf 3 years now. it was running fine for about 3 weeks with an oil change and all the fluids topped off. but about a week ago i went cruising with some buddies and all of a sudden it started sputtering real bad. there was hardly any coolant in it but i know it has a leak somewhere cuz when its parked it leaves a little spot of it. what do u guys think my prob is? sorry if i wasnt clear on anything but just ask if u need any more info.

Check around water pump, check t-stat housing, could be leaking from the freeze plugs, check the hoses. These are good places to start.

If you suspect the head gaskets check the engine oil cap, see if there is any filmy residue or antifreeze smell. If its leaking into the crank case you should find water vapor.

BTW, you can't mill the stock heads and run the stock head gaskets. I have a friend that went through it with a SC. So if you wind up needing to mill the heads.. do your homework first.

k guys. i took a quick look at it yesterday and there was no filmy crap or antifreze smell on the oil cap so i dont think its leaking all the way down. i did not check the water pump but i will today when i wake up. is there any chance it was sputtering because the was no coolant? maybe it was over heating and predetinating? im gunna pick up a few gallons of coolant when i get my check tonight.

ok. well i dumped almost a gallon of coolant in it last night and somehow even tho it was totally empty i got about half a gallon in the radiator and the other half in the resivoir. when i started it, it was still sputtering. im gunna let it run for a while today to see if the coolant disappears but so far its not acting like its the gasket, not smoking, stays cool, ect. the only other thing i can think of is a dead cylinder, either no gas or no spark. it had the DIS replaced, plugs/wires, and head gaskets replaced 4,000 miles ago then it sat for 3 years. it only has 106,*** miles, whys it being such a turd? any ideas?

I think Rich gave you a hint. If the boyfriend replaced the headgaskets and the boyfriend didn't know what he was doing............

Did he replace just the headgasket? Did he get the heads milled since they were probably warped? If he milled it, did he get correct head gaskets?

If he was helping her out so she could sell it then anything was possible. I'm a skeptic when I hear the work was done by a cousin, brother, boyfriend, etc.

Get a leakdown test run on the motor. That should answer whether its a major problem or not.
